[Review 208] Perfect perfect prawn burger @ 麥當勞

After seeing the Ad last nite, was already craving for it in the morning.

Already knew it was going be delicious, before eating it, I had imagined the sauce would be prawn cocktail like. I tried to find more info on it, but Mac site didn't say much about what sauces were used.

Anyway, finally ordered it, the appearance is slightly different to the advertised one.
The advertised one has two sauces, a pinkish one on top and a slightly mustard looking one at the bottom.

Despite being different from the advertised picture, it tastes REAL good, the best burger in Mac's apart from the filet o fish.
I loved the prawn cake inside, it was a mixture of whole prawns that could be seen, embedded in a smooth opaque prawn patty.
The sauce was just how I imaged it, complimenting the prawn well.

But the lettuce was a bit a bit annoying, a little chunky.

[Review 207] Staff should be better trained @ The Taiyaki Crispy Hot Sandwich

20/11/2008
Before coming, had an idea in mind what I wanted to order, however I didn’t know the names of the ones I wanted. Basically was going to order the savory curry one, custard one and the cheese and bacon one.

Anyway got there, ordered the curry one, custard one without any problem, then finally wanted to order the cheese and bacon one, the staff didn’t know which one I wanted, as he said ALL of them contain bacon! Since there was a queue, I was rushed to make a decision the wrong one, it should have been the German potato.

Well I doubt all the flavours would contain bacon, especially the sweet custard one, how could that contain bacon. Anyway he gave me the wrong one (Italian one) with tuna, sausage, cheese etc.

Taste wise, without tasting the cheese and bacon, I really liked the curry one, sufficiently filled with curry. Same with the custard one, however I thought the apple could have been chopped up instead of one big slice.

As for the Italian one, it tasted OK too, but since it was not the one I wanted to eat, I was a little biased towards it.
One of the fishes were overly burnt too, to be exact, some of it had turned in charcoal!!

[Review 206] Drunken chicken for lunch @ 友膳坊 Charlie's Place

20/11/2008

Amongst the vast choice and variety at Landale Street, I did’nt intend to get lunch from here, but after scanning the menu for anything interesting, I saw Drucken chicken leg with rice, so I ordered that.

Apart from this dish, I was surprised at their variety, ranging from China town dishes such as Sweet & Sour, lemon chicken, crispy duck with pancakes to Laksa.

Their menu was quite nicely laid out, and well presented with English, obviously it would be popular for the Westerners who are accustomed to China down dishes. When I came back to check this restaurant out on OpenRice, I found out that it is an international cuisine restaurant, so quite agreeable since I had this impression there without reading its information before hand.

Now to the chicken, it was a plate of rice, with a chopped chicken leg served on top of a big leaf of gem lettuce. The chicken leg was fairly tender, the skin was well marinated in wine sauce. In comparision to drunken chicken I had before, the wine there was not strong enough, just acting as a mere flavour.

But anyway nice to have something different for lunch.

An attractive bar, which I would of thought served Western food, but it turns out to be Thai.
But anyway during lunchtimes they serve sets, with two choices of starters, and main course.
The previous comment is totally agreeable, European style Thai, but quite spicy in comparison to the authentic Thai.

Nicely decorated café, claiming to serve Singaporean food, ordered Pandan cake and Laksa.
Sitting down, the café had nice non-Chinese accent to it, which was quite good, surrounded by western windows, and wooden décor.

Food wise, the Pandan cake tasted ok, soft in texture, a little too sweet compared with the ones from Singapore. As for the Laksa, the soup base, and the ingredients were the ok, the only thing that spoilt it were the noodles, as they were chewy white noodles that didn’t soak up the soup, hence the noodles were in a world of its own!

Ootoya bomb box: Japanese pearl rice topped with chopped okra, beans, tuna sashimi, grated Japanese nagaimo (mountain yam), raw egg and Natto (Fermented soy beans). All the ingredients have one thing in common, being slimey. The fermented soybeans, were sticky too, and stuck together with spiderweb like strings. But the whole thing tasted really good, the rice was nice and soft, and could be slurped with all the slimey ingredients.

Fried chicken in black vinegar sauce: Rice with fried chicken pieces in light coating, the sauce was tangy, and refreshing, and the vegetables accompanying the dish matched well, such as the lotus roots with a crisp taste.

Fried chicken with African sauce:
I wasn’t sure what to expect of this one, because its name isn’t very Japanese, but it tasted similar to the black vinegar sauce one, not as sour, and not spicy as stated.

Anyway everything tasted good, the only thing that could be improved would be supplying spoons, as this is a popular question arising from customers. Also those irritating flies could perhaps be exterminated!!

[Review 202] Cute Bite sized donuts @ Jimcus Donuts

11/11/2008 Jimcus Donuts
西灣河筲箕灣道57-87號 A57 舖
https://www.openrice.com/zh/hongkong/review/cute-bite-sized-donuts-e1950128

Came across this place whilst on the mini-bus, the shop stood out amongst everything on that dull street. Later I looked up the name on OpenRice to discover it was a donut shop.
After reading other peoples comments, it became one of my MUST-GO places to try, because the comments on it were good, mainly because it was not so sweet and they were bite sized, so I had try it. Generally the pictures were fascinating, the donut flavours, appearance etc.

On arriving, there were quite a few customers there, so I took a look at the menu, there were two main types of donuts, the marshmallow ones, and the plain ones.

The marshmallow ones were donuts topped with grilled marshmallows, and the plain ones were just plain sugar ones, both types could be flavoured with your choice of flavour. The staff there told me that the flavoured ones were coated in the relevant flavours, so in my mind, the flavours would taste artificial rather than fresh fruit.

Anyway, I ordered the marshmallow ones, one of each flavour, same with the plain ones.

After trying them, the texture of the donut was denser dough than the American ones, but still soft enough to be a donut, like Tesco’s or Sainsbury’s.
Personally I like the plain ones, plain marshmallow, or the common flavours, such as chocolate, cinnamon because the rest of the fruity flavours taste artificial, more of a scent, which leaves you the strong artificial after taste in your mouth.

All the orders there are freshly done so expect to wait a bit for your order.

I would recommend two ways of eating the marshmallow ones, fresh and after a few hours.
When it’s fresh, the donut is nice warm and soft, and the marshmallow is like fluffy meringue cream topping, then if you try it after a few hours, you can get a different texture, the marshmallow is chewy, and the dough is slightly firmer, and you can taste the chewyness of the marshmallow and the wholesomeness of the donut.

Overall the size of the donut is really good, very small, and lots of flavour to choose from, even though the regular flavours are the best, and the marshmallow. For the fruity ones, I would prefer dried fruit sprinkled on it rather than the powdered flavours.

For the shop décor, it was very fancy, a display cabinet of the donuts, the little cubicles of boxes of different flavours. Although the shop was trying to portray London, I don’t know why, but it felt like metro France.

Packaging wise, the logo and everything was OK, but the big bag looked more like a clothes bag, and the bag is much bigger than the contents, if they designed a box, it would be much more elegant and practical.

Ordered the vietnamese sausage with dry lemon noodles, quite a big dish, but tasteless.
In other places, everything is mixed well together, and all you have to do is add extra fish sauce or some other sauce if needed.

The sausage was just 4 slices, no effort by the kitchen was made to shred it, so that it mixes well, same with the cucumber, tomato etc.
So it was like eating the ingredients separately, or needing to make an effort to bite a bit, then put some noodles in your mouth.

The sauce for the noodle wasnt pleasing either, just sweet liquid with a faint taste of chilli, nor could the fish sauce be tasted.

After taking a stash of menus from Landale street, this one attracted me the most to try due to its ancient chinese layout. The rest of the menus were just put together without thought.
When I started reading the menu, it made itself standout even more, as descriptive words were used on the food, and the items on the menu are not usually offered in other places.

Their speciality is desserts and noodles, and I was drawn to the high fibre black wheat noodles, and the buckwheat noodles. I wanted to try the black noodles the most, as this distinguishes it the most from other noodle shops, the range and variety.

On arrival, I ordered black noodles, but was told, it was discontinued, so I was very disappointed, so then I chose my second choice of buckwheat, but they hadn’t got it in stock either, so double disappointment. So I just ordered a Laksa, as the other noodles dishes would not be satisfying to me with the ordinary noodles.

The Laksa at $38 dollars had many toppings, lots of tofu, chicken, sliced fish balls, and sliced fish ball corners. The spicyness of it was hot hot hot, hotter than any of the other places I had tried so far.

Anyway I wanted to order the Taro pudding, but they only had mango today, so triple disappointment.
I think this shop has potential, but the lack of availability from the items on the menu makes this place not so special after all.

Finally gave it another chance to try their noodles. after the one plagued with hair.

This time i ordered the set, which consists of instants noodles with beef and scrambled eggs and fried vietnamese sausage.

The noodles came first, and I started to eat the noodles before it got too soft, it was just right, and fully flavoured by its soup. As a westerner, I found the metal chopsticks rather slippery, hard to grab the noodles.
Anyway the soup base was very potently strong of herbs, basil leaves, onions etc, but you could also taste the beef broth too.

Then the side dish of scrambled eggs and vietnamese sausage came, the scrambled eggs tasted Ok, and this was my first time trying fried vietnamese sausage, which was ok taste wise.

I would really like to try their breakfast, the white mushrooms and instant noodles.

After refurbishments, the shop looks better in general, not as shanty as before.

However the menu, it is so disorganised, the one on display and the takeaway one, the numbers on the takeout menu do not match the in-house one, so if you do order take-out best to verbally confirm the dish name rather than the number!

603 on the takeout menu is prawn fried rice with prawn paste, but according to their inhouse menu, it is chicken fried rice.
Anyway after confirming it, she still got it wrong, and gave me prawn fried rice.

So much for trying to try what I wanted to try.
The prawn cake, described as bursting with sweet corn, did not have sweetcorn in it as claimed.

Ordered the signiture dish grilled chicken steak with lotus root, squid cake patty.
The chicken was juicy and tender, freshly skilletted chicken thigh off its bone, and marinated with various of sauces, the patty was also good too, juicy and not dry, vegetables were also included to balance out the meat, but not significant enough to be a portion.
I was expecting one patty, but there were too.

Anyway the rice was good too, with sauce and chopped spring onions, and bits of picked white carrot with chilli that spiced it up, distinguishing it from other restaurants.

Another good dish!!

I tried the double decker wasabi fish burger, wasn't as nice as the one from Freshness burger, probably cos Mcdonald's fish tastes bland.

The lettuce pieces didn't really match the burger, same with the bun, because the original filet o fish is just fish, cheese, sauce and a soft bun.
It also made eating it very messy.

If u really wanna try, the single decker should be sufficient, as there is more cheese in proportion to the fish, giving it taste.

Basically after trying the prawn noodles, my next item to try here is the Laksa, not spicy at all, the soup is very strong in coconut flavour, but not as rich as the other places.

Noodle wise, I think only the "Mung" noodles can bring out the taste of the Prawn noodles and the laksa, because the ho fun and vermicelli itself over powers the soup here, since it isnt very strong.

Haven't gone to Happy Lemon for ages, but since they had the new Gaba series I gave it a try.
Ordered the French fragrant grass tea, and coconut tea, the coconut basically tasted of strong coconut milk, and the French fragrant tea was the best, cool, silky with bits of wheat in it.

Tried both flavours of the wraps, the chicken strip one, and the sausage one.

Chicken wrap fillings: piece of chicken, egg, mayonnaise, tomato, soft tortilla wrap.
Tasted OK
Sausage wrap fillings: sausage, egg, mayonnaise, shredded chicken floss
I didn’t really like this one, as the chicken floss tasted like pork floss, very sweet, which is weird with the egg and the rest.

[Review 191] Laksa vs Laksa @ 巴沙新加坡小品 Pasar Singaporean Flavour

A pricey menu, but quality is close enough to Katong.
Information wise, I prefer Katong’s menu as its more informative and lists out all the ingredients, so for Pasar, if you’re an experienced eater or know your Singaporean food, then you would roughly know what ingredients are in it, eg seafood Laksa, the basics are big prawns, fish cakes etc.

Anyway for the Laksa supreme, for $68 everything is the same as Katong, except the mung noodles are thinner in diameter, and the soup base is not so spicy and strong. So for those who want to try a good Laksa, which is not so spicy can come here. There is less chilli oil in the soup base too.

An expensively decorated restaurant, in the hustle bustle of ladies market, slightly too cold inside due to its air conditioning.

Anyway went in for afternoon tea and ordered the chicken Caesar salad with two drinks, vanilla milkshake, and strawberry green tea.

The salad took time for me to like it, initially I thought the sauce was salad cream, because it was sweet, then I began to like it, as the bacon bits and diced chicken went well together, the chicken tasted like cured ham giving the salad the saltiness taste.

Finally I really I liked the strawberry tea, it was frothy and foam like, then at the bottom it had star shaped jelly which gave it that extra special touch.smile

[Review 189] More than what I expected @ 越旺 (已結業) pho' 26

灣仔蘭杜街2號3號舖
Shop 3, 2 Landale Street, Wan Chai
https://www.openrice.com/zh/hongkong/review/more-than-what-i-expected-e1944048

Seeing lots of people queue outside this shop during lunch and even on saturday afternoons, it must be good.

Also the comments on openrice, are positive too, so I had very high expectations.

I didnt want to wait outside and be rushed to finish my food when I was seated, so I ordered a takeaway.
I ordered cambodian noodles in tomato sauce with beef tendons as a topping, which was ready to collect when I got there.

When I got back, I opened the bag and took the contents out, quite a pleasing start I thought, a tub of chopped chilli, a wedge of lime, the soup, and the noodles.

I opened the noodle bowl first, and the noodles were laid out nicely, and there were plenty of fresh onion shreds and chopped spring onion. Then I poured the soup in, and waited for a bit, for the noodles to soak up the soup and loosen up.

Ravaging through the noodles, I started to see some black hair, which is very shocking since this place is meant to be very good. I couldnt believe it, so I borrowed my friends camera to take a pic. I rarely take food pics, but this was just unbelievable. Anyway I thought maybe this is just a one-off thing, but I was wrong I found more, at least 5 strands of short black hair were found, either eyebrow hair or eyelash hair. Since OR will not let me put the pictures here, they are available on request. I have actually submitted the exact review twice, and OR will not upload it. So there must be some so called connections.

After discussing and showing many people, they said its probably animal hair from skin, but my noodle only contained beef tendons. I checked their menu too, there are no pigs skins or anything like that, its mainly beef, tendons, seafood, and fish balls.
So either that food fell on the floor, or their supplier gave them dirty food, but in any case, it should have been washed.

As for the taste, I dont know, if you saw that, you would definitely puke.
I still have the contaminated noodles and tempted to take it to the Food and hygiene department.
But being a food enthusiast, I am willing to give it another try, but not so soon!!
