A sweetcorn but not a sweetcorn
2018-11-06  12 瀏覽
Since my last visit, the owner has changed.
The food is slightly different.
I was hoping to try the wraps but they are only served during the day.
Anyway, as I went there late, just tried the sweetcorn and drinks.

Seemingly like a sweetcorn in presentation, it is not!!!
It was actually a cheesecake.
I seriously thought it was real sweetcorn on the top but when I put the spoon into it, it just gave in as it was soft mousse.
In the middle was corn flavoured cheesecake.
It all tasted good but a bit too sweet for my liking.

For drinks, had Japanese tea and watermelon mojito.
The tea definitely went well with the cheesecake.

[Review 6951] Someone said "crazy" Chinese food"?? @ 港 (已結業)KONG by Bread & Beast

I was checking out the French restaurant on Swatow Street when I saw Kong by Bread and Beast were doing a photo shoot.

Took a look out of curiosity and they were doing a photo shoot for Thanksgiving and Christmas with turkey and delicious pies!!!
While I was looking, this guy came out and said that I should come in and try the "crazy Chinese food" which was a big contrast to Turkey!!!!
{Actually I was more interested in Turkey to be honest!]

The menu was quite interesting so decided to try it anyway.
There were lots of Western dishes with Chinese ingredients and Vice versa such as mac and cheese with Chinese preserved sausages and ricerolls covered in cheese.

The one that I really had to try was the Caesar salad made with fried dace in black bean sauce since I missed the chance to try the fried dace in black bean sauce pizza at some hotel in San po kong.
I couldn't believe how well they went together but I am biased as I just love anything with fried dace that I once requested for fried dace black bean congee and it was damn good.
This dish was inspired by salad with anchovies and capers which was replaced by the fried dace and it worked.

Next were the Brussel sprouts which I hesitated to order as they just looked dark in photos and boy I was wrong.
The photo does not do it any justice.
When you eat them, the surface of the Brussel sprout are crispy but soft inside bursting with tangy lime and fish sauce and you just can't stop eating them.

There were so many dips to choose from like black garlic aioli, strawberry ricotta, fa diu liver pate and bone marrow whip with a choice of scallion bing or ciabatta.
Went for the strawberry ricotta and crispy ciabatta which was quite nice as it was liking having savoury scones with cream and strawberries.

Finished with the cherry kola beef brisket.
Inside the rice roll, there was so much lean beef brisket which is the same stuff they use for the sandwiches during the day.

By day this place is [Bread and Beast] and by night they are [KONG] by Bread and Beast

Bread and Beast have been really successful as I first tried them at Island East Markets a few years ago before they started this restaurant in Wanchai.

Starfish on the menu in Hong Kong
2018-06-28  722 瀏覽
I'm not really a person for edible Hardcore things like Scorpions etc but Grilled Starfish was on the menu so I guess it's legal as this is HK.
Anyway, I googled it and it belongs to the Sea Urchin family so the taste and texture should be along those lines.

When I got there, I was greeted by this lovely rustic Chinese decor, red lanterns etc.
On the tables, there were these gimmicky wet napkins and disposable gloves disguised as condoms while napkins as cigarette box.
The slogan on the apron was cute.
Translated as "you're one of my people when you've eaten my food"

For starters, had the egg dumplings which were different.
It is yellow because the dumpling skin is made of egg.

The ducks blood wasn't as spicy as it looked.

Next were the skewers.
It was really good because you can choose what skewers to have and they have lots of vegetarian choices.

Next came the star of the show!
The Star Fish!

Inside, you will find this brownish/grey stuff like crab tomalley which doesn't really have much taste hence the wasabi soy sauce.
The next signature dish is the seafood in broth platter which is like a seafood platter but in their signature spicy broth!!

All the seafood was fresh and tasty.
Finished with the Sichuan Jelly drink which was really refreshing especially the Lychee!

I'm not familiar with what type of noodles this restaurant serves because it is listed as Gweilin noodles yet on the menu you find Chongqing Noodles and other goodies.
This is the lovely side of MongKok, you will find different Chinese joints by Ladies Market.

The snacks will blow your mind away especially the black tofu which I found crispy and spicy.

The Egg dumplings were unique and I haven't seen anything like it in Hong Kong because the dumpling skin is made of egg and inside was the usual dumpling filling.

For noodles, had the noodles in pig's stomach broth with chicken which is heated on a mini stove.

The soup was nice and peppery.
I had the Chongqing noodles and the portion was big compared to other places.
After mixing everything together, there is a nice Spicy kick to it with the occasional crunchy soybeans.
As well as these noodles, there are some black coloured noodles which I don't know what they are so a little description with the pictures might help.
I will probably come back and try the black noodles.

[Review 6557] VEGG - VEGAN Egg @ Green Common

Shop G05, G/F, Park Central, 9 Tong Tak Street, Tseung Kwan Ohttps://www.openrice.com/zh/hongkong/review/vegg-vegan-egg-e3049071

VEGG is basically the word for VEGAN eggs.
Currently there are so many different brands about but JUST SCRAMBLE is the first one to land in Hong Kong so I was really keen on trying it because I have a curiosity to try different things as long as it isn't scorpions or crunchy things that crawl.

Anyway, there were four options on the menu that has just scramble.
I went for the scrambled egg with vegan beef.
According to the media, just scramble is made from mung beans.
It makes you wonder how the texture is made to be like an egg with congealing properties but then glass vermicellis is also made from mung beans but both these products are very different.
If I was to fake some egg, I would experiment using seaweed algae and okra because algae has the bounciness while okra has the sliminess.
Anyway, back to scrambled egg, I was surprised the texture and taste was no different to normal eggs, so unless you are eating expensive tasty organic eggs, it would be hard to tell a difference.
Just scramble is the first vegg in Hong Kong but we shall see more brands in the future.

The difference with this noodle joint is that you can order through the self ordering kiosk but the limitations is that you have to pay by octopus and the interface  does not seem to have English.

There is an area to return your trays, dispose of food waste etc.
Interesting decor or it could be fengshui:

They had this really evilicious crab meat and salted egg yolk paste so I decided to try it.

I drank the soup first so that I could mix the paste in the noodles.

The best thing was that the paste was not too salty yet you could still taste the crab meat and starchy yolk.

My friend had the cart noodles with various of toppings which looked delicious as well.

Overall, the noodles were great so I definitely recommend the crab paste and the fresh beancurd skin to go with and try their other noodles.

Burger King Fried Chicken BKFC!!!

I was quite chuffed to see Burger King have fried chicken so decided to try it.

Burger King in UK does not have fried chicken but they have it in Singapore and Malaysia because there is more demand for chicken as it is mainly a Muslxx population.
The price of the fried chicken was pricey! $39 for two pieces of chicken which was originally $5X.

Anyway, I got the meal which includes fries and a drink.

The chicken looked a bit over done.

It was evenly coated and very crispy as advertised.
Thankfully, the chicken was still juicy and not shrivelled up like HK KFC.

If it wasn't that pricey, I wouldn't mind coming back for it again.
In terms of fried chicken in Hong Kong, it was really good but in other countries, this is the basic standard because I find the quality of chicken in HK generally poor.
For the average HKer, I think they would like it because they like everything burnt.

In HK, everyone is particular on how they like their burger patties for example the size and how well they are cooked and the quality of the beef.
Anyway, Grubers from Monaco are in HK and I just couldn't wait to try it because of their patties which are blended with fresh ingredients.
There are currently 7 blends of which five are beef, and the other two are chicken and veggie blend.
For $88, you can get a combo which includes a side and drinks.
[some drinks are not included but you can pay a few dollars extra to make it a combo].
Starting with the Sexy Fries, they looked like Crinkle cut flat chips and the best thing is that they had real mayonnaise because mayonnaise and chips are delicious and evilicious.

For the burgers, I tried the chimichurri beef, veggie blend and the chicken.
Chimichurri was clearly my choice over the Jalapeno and truffle because it is a blend of chopped parsley , minceed garlic, olive oil and oregano.
I could also taste some oregano dressing in the lettuce which brought out the flavours and the beef patty was springy and juicy.

As well as the beef, the veggie was another one of my favourite because it had potatoes in the blend.
Adding crispy bacon made it even tastier because the saltiness of the bacon goes well with the veggie patty.

Last but not least was the chicken blend, the chicken patty is dusted with grounded maize which makes it crispier and the chicken patty reminded me of the the UK Burger King chicken burgers.
To summarize, I think the best toppings to add are bacon and mushrooms and I am definitely coming back again!
