The noodles here are as good as Cheong Fat, I ordered the boat noodles which is basically vermicelli in pork blood soup.
I was impressed it came with two pieces of crunchy fish stomach.
I ate them quickly before they become soft from soaking the broth.

The soup was not as rich as Cheong Fat, and they use long shaped bowls instead of round ones.

As well as that, I ordered rice with pork knuckle, the picked vegetables that came with it were nice, and not sweet.

This place is opposite the famous Cheong Fat which serves boat noodles too, so it is natrual that this is a second choice when it is full.

I ordered the thick soup with fish bladder, it was delux yet made cheap because it contained chicken feet and bamboo shoots and blood cubes.
It was nice but the taste was over powered by bamboo shoots and coriander.

[Review 957] Too sweet @ 檀島 Honolulu Cafe

Chose a savory bun and a sweet cake.

The savory bun I got was the herb bun, which was extremely chewy, embedded with lots of herbs.
It was also rather salty for bread.

The cake I got was a slice of white cake, it had a nice texture.
However it was too sweet.

There are other locations of honolulu, but the choice and taste is the traditional chinese bakery.

Usually toasted sandwiches are made in sandwich toaster, the finished product is basically a right angled triangle.
In the culture of HK, they have been known to be called "flying saucers" although I do not know why, the usual shape is not round and nothing in resembelance of a flying saucer.
Finally, I have found one that is round!

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Steps making the flying saucer
Fillings placed on normal square slices of bread
Sandwich in the toaster device
Edges cut off with scissors

It is the same as the normal toasted sandwiches except the toaster has a round imprint on it, after it is toasted, the edges are trimmed off, which is quite a waste, about 23% of the square bread is thrown away.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

There are four flavours, all are made with cucumber and tomato.

The flavours available are:
Tuna
Chicken breast
Duck breast
Salmon

Ordered the salmon and tuna.

Tuna toasted Sandwich:
The tuna was in creamy sauce, and was very messy to eat, as the filling kept overflowing when you bit into it.
The typical Chinese taste, not my cup of tea.
I would have liked it if it plain tuna and cheese.

Salmon toasted sandwich:
I was also expecting this to be nice, but there was too much mayonnaise in the middle making it sickly, and the cuts of salmon were not that nice either, it still had brown/grey bits on the salmon.

Got the signature fish bento for $25.

In the bento box it includes rice sprinkled with toppings, covered with a piece of seaweed, fried fish and fish cake on a bed of pasta.
Sweetcorn in mayonnaise, pickled radish, julienne bamboo shoots.

Overall, the best item was the fish cutlet, it was slightly creamy inside, the fishcake was a bit rubbery though.

The sweetcorn in mayonnaise had a weird smoky taste.

Although the slice of pizza was rather expensive at $20 per slice being in Po Lam which is part of the suburbs, it tasted quite nice.
The base of the pizza was thin, not crispy, but slightly soft and chewy.
The cheese was the best part, because it tasted like cheddar rather than tasteless mozzarella.
The pizza was topped with generous amounts of sliced mushrooms, however I did not appreciate them because they were the Asian mushrooms which does not match the pizza.

The food here in general is good, I saw the fried chicken set with rice.

The name was weird, crunchy jade (tsui - tsui), the jade usually means courgettes.

Anyway, the set comes with iced ribena with jelly.

From the product shot there is no soy sauce on the rice, however there was soy sauce on my plate of rice, other than that, it was 80% like the product picture.

There was crunchy garlic sprinkled on top, which I thought could be missed out, as it tasted nice without them.

The pieces of chicken was juicy and tender, and coating of the chicken is so similar to the fried chicken at "cheese pizza".

Interestingly, this is the first chinese fried chicken I thought was nice, usually it is uncoated chicken directly put in oil and fried.

For improvements, it should be served with chips and ketchup.

[Review 952] High expectations with slight disappointment @ Frey & Ford

When it first opened, the pictures of the food were amazing, they reminded me of the savory sandwiches at La Salon De Robuchon.

I arrived there at 11.40 thinking of a late breakfast, however I was surprised there were no sandwiches in the display counter, so I walked elsewhere and came back at noon, and the Chef was just putting the sandwiches on display, the Salmon sandwiche was the last to come and still in the making.

I am surprised that it is located in Central, and they start late. I would of thought there would be alot of people ordering gourmet breakfasts from there.

Presentation, they were as pretty as expected, and instead of the fillings sandwiched in between, they were on top of the bread like fine patisserie.

Also at the scene was a food and hygiene inspector issuing their new license, hence they are now fully licensed.

For the sandwich range, I was told only the top 8 were available and the rest were Chef's daily specials.

The range available were:
Salmon dill creme,
Peking chicken,
Poached egg and sausage,
Roast beef,
Grilled pepper caponata,
Giallo salad,
Branston double decker,
Salade nicoise

I was going to get the poached egg and sausage, which is similar to English breakfast, however the poached egg wasnt the usual poached style, but a hard boiled one.
So in the end I ordered the Salmon dill creme, and the ones I was most looking forward to were not available.
I think its annoying when its printed on the menu, and it is not available to order, perhaps because they are more expensive, so there would be no profit under the opening promotion.

The ones I was hoping to order were:
Rock shrimp milanese (rock shrimp, saffron aoili and chives)
Moti mahal classic (diced tandoori chicken housed in a bread bowl)
Hummus pita wheel (hummus, ham, olives wrapped in a pita bread roll)

Luckily, they had a promotion because 3 out of the 4 items I wanted were not available.
The salmon sandwich was nice as expected.

For drinks I got Inko's Melon Iced Tea, it is packaged similarly to Snapple, but not as sugary as stated.
The taste was light and refreshing, the taste of tea was stronger than the melon.
