[Review 2157] Retro Chinese cafe by the sea with delicious food @ 海安咖啡室 Hoi On Cafe

When I saw pictures of the noodles tossed in spring onion and ginger sauce I just had to come here for them.

On the map it showed that this cafe was almost by the sea.

It was hard to locate that day because that building was being rennovated so the front of the shop was almost covered by scaffolding.
I barely managed to recognise this cafe only because there was a yellow fire hydrant on one of the photos and because it was so old with red decor inside.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Photos of the restaurant:
The decor of the restaurant is probably a sight for the people in the city.

As well as the decor, I was surprised how friendly the staff were who were not pushy and extremely patient.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Apart from the noodles, there were pictures of the toast with scrambled eggs, corned beef and extremely generous amounts of spring onions which I had to try too.

The product shots were interesting, there was some element of design or layout in it, even the Chinese characters looked neatly laid out with style and written with some different font!

Although I had ordered a bit too much this time, everything was worth trying.
The roast pork was sold out that day so I only chose luncheon meat with the tossed noodles.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Noodles in ceramic pot:

The noodles they have here are not Nissin instant noodles but they tasted good enough.
The noodles were in a ceramic pot topped with with so many items such as five spice pork, fried egg, luncheon meat, roast duck breast etc.
The noodles were piping hot especially since they were served in a ceramic pot and there was a film of hot oil covering the noodles.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Scrambled eggs with corned beef on toast:

I loved the toast, the amount of spring onions was so generous that it was nearly green.
The corned beef was not as salty as I expected, but the combination of scrambled eggs, spring onions and beef with toast was really delicious.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Instant noodles tossed in spring onion and ginger oil:

Next time I order this, I will ask for the non spicy version because the spicyness is quite strong that sometimes it over powers the spring onion and ginger oil.
Otherwise the noodles were delicious because the spring onion and ginger oil tastes exactly like the sauce for dipping chicken.
The luncheon meat looked slightly different to the usual as it had specks of meat in it.
It would have been great if the noodles were more al-dente as I found them too soft and the texture was a bit spongy.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Egg and five spice meat sandwich:

I hesitated ordering this one, but it also turned out delicious. It does not look nice on the photos but it was delicious.
The five spice pork was slightly too spicy for me but the egg was really fragrant.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Pepper grinder:

The pepper grinder was quite interesting, the pepper comes out from the sides of the top and not the top!

The food here is delicious so came back for more, however forgot to ask for the non spicy version this time so ended up with really spicy green bean sheet noodles.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Green bean sheet noodles:

As I forgot to ask for the non spicy version, they were spicy this time, the colour is redder than the nice spicy version and lots of spices are mixed in the noodles.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Sichuan chicken:

The chicken tasted better this time as there was more pieces of chicken with meat on it.

[Review 2155] Second revisit for roast potatoes @ La Rotisserie

As well Roast chicken, I love Roast potatoes as well.
I could not get enough of them last time.
On my previous visit I did not eat them immediately so they were slightly cold and chewy.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Roast potatoes HKD25:

The portion was slightly bigger this time and not as salty so there was improvement.
I loved the crisp roasted potato skin and the silky soft inside of the potato with herbs.
They definitely taste perfect eaten right after you get them.

[Review 2154]Organic chestnut pralines @ 點點綠 Green Dot Dot

I have not really bought from Green Dot Dot before apart from the occasional bottled drinks that they sell.

However when I walked past this time I saw some chocolates that were in the freezer which seemed intriguing because you do not usually need to freeze chocolates.

They had chestnut pralines for $19 per box of four pralines.

I chose the chestnut pralines with sour cherry.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
chestnut pralines with sour cherry:
The shop said that they were meant to be thawed before eating but I didnt think they would be that hard so I ate them immediately.
When I opened the box, the surface of the chocolate was already wet.

Just when I was expecting a hard centre it was really soft and did not seem like it had been frozen, so either their freezer was not working or the filling does not go hard when frozen.

The temperature of the praline was not that cold when I bit into it so I think their freezer was not that cold.
Anyway, the taste of the praline was quite nice, the chestnut filling was natural and silky with a plump tart cherry in the middle.

PART TWO: Desserts at Malacca
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Sago Pudding:

MENU Description - Tapioca pearl pudding with coconut cream and palm sugar.
The sweetness of this was just right, and the pudding was a ball made of huge tapioca pearls with coconut cream on top.
The tapioca pearls were nice and chewy and the coconut cream and palm sugar syrup gave it delicate flavoring.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Kuih Dadar:

MENU Description - A rolled pandan-flavoured crêpe filled with grated coconut in palm sugar.
This was my favourite, the fragrant soft crepes filled with substantial grated coconut that was sweetened by palm sugar.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Durian pudding:

The durian taste was really strong and milk in the pudding made the texture smooth and silky.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★

Once again, I would like to Thank Agnes and Traders hotel for the delicious tasting at Malacca.

I love Singaporean and Malaysian food so I was delighted when Agnes invited me to her tasting session organised by Traders hotel.
It has been a long time since I have written a review for the singmalay series because I have tried most of the singmalay restaurants that I could find.
This review is somewhat special because it is the 30th review in the series and it is my first tasting for singmalay food.
We were really privileged to be able to try almost every item on the menu.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Satay - Chicken and Beef:

MENU Description - Grilled chicken and beef skewers in traditional Malay marinade served with an aromatic peanut sauce, rice cakes, cucumber and onion wedges.
Both the chicken and beef skewers were really nice, they were flavoured and moist, there was a strong lemongrass taste to it and after the peanut sauce was added, the satays were livelier.

The rice cakes were interesting because they looked like white radish but it was mashed rice with flour.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Gado Gado:

MENU Description - A warm vegetable salad with eggs, fried bean curd, peanut sauce dressing topped with Emping (Melinjo crackers).
This was similar to the above with a lovely mix of eggs, beancurds and legumes which was served warm.
It was the first time I tried the emping crackers which had a bitter taste.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Singapore Otak-Otak:

MENU Description - Peranakan spicy fish paste wrapped and grilled in banana leaf.
The fish was really delicate and there was strong lemongrass taste.
I really liked it because it was boneless and it was slightly spicy.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Penang Prawn Noodle:

MENU Description - A spicy prawn and pork soup noodle combination with bean sprouts and water spinach, topped with prawns and sliced pork, garnished with crispy fried shallots.
There were vermicelli and oil noodles in the bowl, the prawn broth was really sweet with a hint of chili.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Penang Koay Teow Thng:

MENU Description - Light flat rice noodles in duck broth, served with fish balls, fish cakes, duck meat and julienne of pork blood topped with fried garlic.
Compared to the other noodles, this was not spicy and it was light.
I liked the finely chopped pork blood curds on the noodles.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Penang Assam Laksa:

MENU Description - A signature Penang dish of thick rice vermicelli in a tangy and spicy fish-based soup, garnished with fresh pineapple, mint, cucumber, onions and ginger flower accompanied by a dash of black shrimp paste.
This was my favourite because it was very refreshing but at the same time it was the spiciest.
The black shrimp paste that came with it was interesting because it was sweet yet had a strong prawn taste.
The penang assam laksa is a must try because this is the only place that serves it in HK.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Hainanese Chicken Rice:

MENU Description - Tender boiled free-range chicken served with flavourful rice, accompanied by chicken broth, special chilli sauce, ginger puree and dark soy sauce.
The chicken was really tender and the ginger sauce complimented it well.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Beef Rendang:
MENU Description - A Malay specialty of tender beef, simmered in coconut milk and a mixture of aromatic spices.
The beef was tender and the coconut in the sauce was strong.
The spicyness of this was mild.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Sambal Belachan Ladies fingers:

MENU Description - Ladies’ fingers fried with chilli and shrimp paste.
The okra was cooked with onions and chili hence it had a very flavoursome taste.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Chin Chow:

MENU Description - Herbal black jelly drink.
The drink I chose was herbal jelly which was soothing. It was hard to choose because they had so many choices for drinks which I liked especially the unsweetened calamansi which you sweeten yourself and they also had the barley drink too.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Japanese Matcha cake HKD9:
The matcha cake looked nice so decided to get it.

I did not realise that when I took the photo of the box I managed to make it look like the end of the world cake because it had the date 21/12/12 on it as well as the words "mut yat"!
But the "mut" actually stands for the mat part of matcha for those who know Chinese!
Anyway the taste of the cake was rather disappointing because it was dry and too sweet.
