Guschlbauer branches to Wanchai

Walked past a few days ago but didn't go in because there was such a crowd.

Later I regretted it because I found out that there was a 20% discount and they had a new chocolate and cheese Austrian bun flavour.
Anyway, finally went and got the chocolate and cheese Austrian bun to try which cost $28.
At the counter, one of the girls had smiles while the other did not.

I think this so called Austrian Cheese bun is inspired by the Topfenstrudel which is a cream cheese strudel because I get no result for Austrian cheese bun except for Chinese media!!

As I have never had it before I always thought that it would be like a big piece of souffle but it wasn't.
It looks like a big piece of soft souffle because the middle part filled with cheese is dusted so you can't see the bun part.

The other side where it is not dusted you can see it is a bun!

The middle part is filled with cheese and chocolate filling.

After trying it, it basically tastes like a bun with a fluffy soft croissant texture that has not been baked filled with heavy chocolate cream but I wouldn't say that it was cheese.
But by Hong Kong standards, anything creamy = cheesy!

If I walk pass again, I might try the original.
And yes I did pay for it.

[Review 5381] Brunches everyday @ Oldish

Usually all the exciting brunches happen during the weekend but here they serve brunches during the weekday until 5pm including a drink.
There is a choice of full breakfast or eggs benedict and they let you choose a good variety of teas so I chose my Earl Grey but then they told me you can also order the apple tea as well without any extra charge so I had that instead.

Started with the apple tea which came with apple slices floating on top.
The taste was surprisingly natrual and not cloyingly sweet with a good balance of apple to tea.

It also came with beetroot soup which I didn't see on menu so that was a bonus.
There was a nice nutty taste to it because there were bits of almond in it.
Then my lovely eggs benedict arrived which came with a huge pile of salad.
Perfect on a hot summers day.

The salad dressing was really appetizing so I ate the salad first before starting on the benedict.
It was a bit strange they used a raisin muffin but the parma ham made up for it because there was so much parma ham and the egg was poached just right with a runny yolk complemented nicely by the creamy avocado.

[Review 5380] Modernized Chinese fare @ 名館 Ming Bistro

Located on the 14th floor of Hysan, Ming's Bistro has interesting decor and a stylish menu.
They serve buckwheat tea which is quite different.
Tried the black garlic soup which was quite unusual and it was quite dark in appearance too!

The soup was quite sweet in taste.
I love okra and there were so many choices so in the end I got okra in Peking sauce which was an appetizing spicy vinagrette.

Next was the steamed loofah topped with garlic which was sweet and had a strong garlic taste because there was so much chopped garlic on top.

The pork dumplings were ok but I found the pork oil a bit overwhelming.
Lastly we finished with the dimsum birdcage which had a bit of everything.
My favourite item was the butterfly sandwich filled with sweet Chinese ham, pineapple and cucumber.

Back for galettes and crepes

Since my last visit, the crepes and galettes taste still as good as before but now there are more options on the menu such as roast chicken, mussels, pork, pan fried cod.
For me, I had the duck galette and desserts because these are just my favourites.
The duck galette was crispy with a lovely cheese filling in the middle.
For dessert, had the caramel crepe, pineapple waffle and mini pancakes.
The pineapple waffle was surprisingly good with tangy pineapple pieces complimented with sweet icecream on top of the waffle.
The mini pancakes look like mini British pancakes but they are slightly thicker and firmer with a taste similar to the crepes.

Finished off with my favourite Earl Grey tea and you get honey to add to it which makes drinking tea luxurious.

[Review 5378] Spoilt for choice @ 老川皇

I didn't really have much expectations for this place because it was in MK and it was an upstairs restaurant.
Anyway, when I got there the menu was really extensive and the restaurant was bigger than I imagined.
Looking at the menu, they had steamed fish, the usual Sichuan choices and some unusual items like the spicy squid and fish offal.
The drinks menu impressed me too because there was fresh avocado milk on the menu but sadly they ran out of avocado that day.
I ordered the cantaloupe melon juice and to my surprise it was freshly blended and not syrup.
They have a fruit cabinet.
I was excited about the fish offal dish I ordered because offal normally means livers, hearts, lungs etc but the fish offal at this place was FISH ROE!! I love fish roe, this is the first item I eat if there is any from steamed fish! The second is fish cheeks and eyes.
Never would I have thought fish roe would be classified as fish offal but anyway it was bloody delicious because it was crispy on the outside and full of Sichuan spicy flavours.
They were generous as well with the fish roe.
It is similar to battered roe in British fish and chip shops but with more intense flavours.
The sizzling cumin lamb was a bit disappointing though because it was a bit too chewy for my liking.
