Revisiting an old place
2016-12-04 199 瀏覽
Restaurants are thriving in Wanchai, and people are not deserting the area after work.
There are so many new and modern restaurants popping up that old ones are slowly disappearing away like Prawn noodle shop and Charlies place.
I visited 大發茶餐廳 in 2011 where it was filled with regular diners who would give fresh faces a death stare when you went it.
All that has changed and it seems they are in competition with new restaurants nearby in the weekends and evenings.
I went on a Sunday when it was quieter.
To my surprise they now have an English menu.
Ordered my favourite blood curds and two other dishes which I have not tried before,
I wanted to order the salt and pepper white baits again but I didn't.
+++++
Blood curds:
Compared to the blood curds served a few years ago, they were not so oily this time with less garlic and chili but still delicious.
+++++++++++++
Lemon chicken:

You can evidently see two colours, a lighter piece (bottom) and a dark one (top).
The lighter one is obviously fresh and the darker one was fried twice or from yesterday which should be crispier and it was.
Anyway, it was surprisingly delicious because the lemon sauce was tart enough and not cloyingly sweet.
[From observation in UK, Chinese Takeaways will normally mix fresh and old Lemon chicken so that you don't serve a customer all the old stuff and plus it won't taste nice so they won't come back.]
+++++++++
Salted fish and preserved veg pork patties:
1 讚好
The patties looked dry but they were not and the salted fish in the patties were really delicious.
+++++++
Visits in 2011 and 2012.

Previous at Atelier Vivanda, it was just meat and potatoes but now they have bar bites because not everyone likes a fixed menu.
Started with mocktails.
My orange one was refreshing with a strong hint of passionfruit as well.

We ordered items from the bar menu
Bon Fire (bar menu).
The smokey aroma was a bit too strong for me.

Combo Platter which had Comte Cheese / Thinly Sliced Smoked Beef Matured 50 days / Peta Negra Bellota Pure Origins Iberian.
Started with thinly sliced smoked beef that has matured in 50 days, it was flavourful and appetizing before dinner.
Pata Negra Bellota Pure Origins Iberian had a waxy texture.
The cheese was my favourite because it had a light taste which was enhanced by the Caractère olive oil that has a lovely peppery taste.
Sardine Marinated (bar menu):
I liked the sardines because they were salty and tasted great with bread,

French Oysters served with charcoal, lemon juice and vodka granité (bar menu):
Duck Leg Terrine (bar menu):
Salmon gravalax:
Fresh salmon and nicely pickled sides.
Egg:
The yolk was runny and it was coated in crispy black sesame.
For dessert finished with Avocado cream muesli which was surprisingly light.
The grapefruit sorbet was natrual and soothing..

[Review 5613] Ferrero Rocher Waffle @ 摩豆 Modos

I only eat waffles from here because it doesn't have that Typical egg taste that HKers love.
Anyway, the waffle here is crisp and chewy.
That day I had the Ferrero Rocher which was filled with chocolate and hazelnut and surprisingly it tasted like eating waffle with a melted FR inside.

Went here because I wanted to try the cheesy Korean noodles.
Unfortunately for both choices, it comes with a Korean soup base which is obviously hot.
Luckily they have another soup base so I didn't use the original because after I tried it, it was way to spicy.
The cheese things were filled with cheese and tasted quite artificial because it was too bouncy with no meat or fish taste to it.

[Review 5611] Expats secret Thai joint @ 迦米泰式小食 Tonkla Thai Snack

Shop D2, G/F., 72 Java Road, North Point

For years and years, I have been recommended by expats to try this place.
A few weeks ago I walked past and peeped into the shop and an expat who was dining there said I should go in and try.
Finally tried it one afternoon because I was in the area.
The menu was simple, the usual Thai stuff.
Anyway, I tried the chicken satay because it was recommended.
The chicken was fresh but the lemongrass was too strong for me and the sauce was too sweet.
Although not as good as expected, they put effort into their food and grilling the satays.

Perhaps I was expecting more on the decor but it was only the entrance and ceiling that was decorated.
Food wise, there were no surprises or disappointments because it was the usual fare you get from Wongjiasha.
Started with drunken chicken, the liquor was fragrant but the chicken was the usual skin and bones.
The crispy eels were sweet and crunchy but unfortunately something pricked my gums which I was bone but it was too black to be bone.
Bony spare ribs:
The vegetable dish was my favourite because it was light and healthy but strangely contained tomatoes.
The rice crackers tasted really good when you drenched it in sweet and sour sauce to make them go soft.
Finished with the noodles which took ages to untangle when the broth was poured into the noodles because the noodles were cold and clumped together when they arrived..
