Sichuan fare that isn't too fiery

I love Sichuan food so tried this place.

Arrived early and had drinks first as the others haven't arrived yet.

There is a bar on the first floor and I love the candle holder which is filled with dried chilis!
Started with the tequila colada which had a good coconut milk base that prepares your stomach for spicy food but the food wasn't as spicy as anticipated.
The tequila colada was refreshing with a subtle pineapple taste as well as coconut.

After the others arrived, we went to the second floor where it was nicely decorated.

Started with some appetizers: Sliced pork with chili and garlic, ox tongue and tripe medley and okra with ginger sauce.
Sliced pork with chili and garlic:

As well as pork, they had these dough pieces called ears which was similar to Spatzle.

ox tongue and tripe medley:

The tripe medley was a great starter because I love springy meaty tripe infused in an aromatic spicy oil.

The okra with ginger sauce was a light and healthy jazzed up by the fiery ginger sauce.

Moved on to the Seafood bean soup which tasted like pumpkin soup with tiny pieces of grains that looked like couscous. There was lots of seafood in it.

For the mains, had the Diced chicken with chili and cashews which tasted quite sweet.

The Dry braised prawns were huge and succulent.

The crispy fish in spicy sauce was not spicy at all but slightly sweet.

The Cheungdu roasted duck is a bit different to Cantonese roast duck because it came with a delicious gravy which complimented rice perfectly as it was flavoured with lots of Sichuan spices.

Finished off with the fermented glutinous rice with clear jelly.

It was such a good dessert to finish off with because it was not too sweet.

A good place for fine Sichuan food that is not too spicy.

[REview 5811] Lot of brittle bones @ 連和燒味餐廳

This place is quite expensive for Cantonese roast.
Anyway, stopped by for some chicken and requested for white meat otherwise it would be bones and skin.
It was not as good as I hoped because it was still quite a lot of bones but the worst was the bone fragments ready to crack your tooth any moment.
The chicken was dry and tough so in that respect it wasn't so Chinese.

Went to this branch to avoid the crowd.
Even though there is a new branch in MK, I prefer going to this branch because the HK side is always better.
As I was having lunch, I only had a piece of fried chicken and it was succulent and juicy with a good side of gravy.

Sri Lankan food on the HK Island

There used to be only one place for Sri Lankan food in Hong Kong and that was Sai Kung which is so inconvenient.

Thanks to Timeout, I discovered this new joint located on this street in Sheung Wan selling Chinese delicacies and this little joint really sticks out.

They serve street food so expect string hoppers and Kottus.

I ordered the string hoppers with potato milk curry and the Cheese Kottu with beef curry.

The string hoppers and potato milk curry came first.

Tried the string hoppers on its own and they were surprisingly flavoured despite looking like unflavoured Chinese rice vermicelli.

These string hoppers are steamed so they are springy and soft and there are about 6 of these hoppers on the plate.

The potatoes were very aromatic because there was a lovely cinnamon aroma and taste to it and there is even a cinnamon stick in it as well but the only let down was the potatoes were not soft enough.

The next dish was the cheese kottu, I was really looking forward to this because I love cheese. It smelt so nice because of the onions and chili but so far nothing was too spicy.

The smell was so comforting because they smelt like the Shatkora kebabs in London.

The side of beef curry I ordered was also amazing because I love the mix of coriander seeds, fennel seeds and cumin seeds.

They sell that curry powder too which is a special blend bottled exclusively for Serendib!!

To finish off, I had their Sri Lankan tea which is just Ceylon tea and it was so good because it was fragrant and not bitter like the ones you get in HK.

Serendib is run by an interesting couple who communicate in Japanese so you can't eavesdrop unless you know Japanese~~~

Was not in the mood for food like I usually am because my phone died on me.
Ordered the Chips coated in salty egg yolk set which comes with a yoghurt drink for $68 which is quite a good deal because I was going to order a drink anyway.
These chips are a must eat item, they were coated in delicious salty egg yolk which gave it a starchy salty crunch.
I chose the lychee yoghurt drink which had a huge cute mushroom shaped foam cap.
It had a fragrant lychee taste with a hint of calpis.
The Asian style pizza was the star of the show, topped with delicious tasty sakura shrimps.

[Review 5807] A touch of Japanese and Peruvian @ Tokyolima

It was rare for Peruvian food to be found in HK a few years ago. There were only one or two then but they didn't last long.

Luckily they are getting popular these days and people are starting to know what Peruvian food is.

Here they serve Nikkei cuisine which brings together Japanese and Peruvian.

If you like Japanese, refeshing lemon and limes, cumin and strong flavours, this is for you.

Had some cocktails at the bar as we were early.

Started with the Earl Grey lemonade which was a mix of strawberry, lychee juice, earl grey syrup and rose lemonade.

It tasted more refreshing than sweet with a good fizz.

I had the coco loco water which was very sweet and hydrating mixed with lemon juice and lavender syrup.

La Causa:

This was comfort food for me in terms of appearance and taste because the prawn tempura is exactly the same as the prawn balls served in Chinese takeaways!!

Beneath the prawn was a bed of tangy beetroot mash and prawn tartar.

H&M:

I always shop at H&M so this caught my eye. It is actually a plate of Hamachi and Maguro carpaccio in tangy shoyu citrus dressing topped with spices.

octopus sticks:

I loved the octopus skewers because it was paired with black olive tapenade, carrot puree and capers.

A mix of strong flavours.

Picanha sticks:

This was juicy pieces of rump steak with edamame puree and pickled cucumber.

It was a bit like having steak and peas.

+++

tacu tacu:

This is a Peruvian rice legume pancake topped with stir fried vegetables in a Chimichurri sauce.

It was a wonderful dish because it was very similar to Nepalese chatamari and the texture is a bit like super thick rice porridge that has been pan fried.

We finished with dessert to round up such a delicious meal.

Had the green tea tiramisu which was really good because I liked the firmness of the matcha cake and the fluffy mascarpone cream.

The calamansi meringue was a lemon meringue with a modern twist because they used calamansi which is not so tart.

Decent bagels in Kowloon

Discovered this relaxing place for coffee when I was in the area.

The decor was quite nice and I loved the glass roof which made me feel like being in a greenhouse.

They specialize in coffee but I was there for the bagel.

It was impressive the vegetarian had spicy hummus in a location like that because not many people in Kowloon would know what hummus is.

It was certainly delicious with the feta and cream cheese but a bit too spicy and the bagel was topped with aromatic sesame and poppy seeds.

$72 for a vegetarian bagel is too expensive for Kowloon as it does not include a drink.
