Shanghai dishes with a twist of Sichuan

I love Shanghai dishes as well as Sichuan dishes.
Never would I have thought New Shanghai would be serving some Sichuan dishes but until the end of April.

While I was waiting for others to arrive, started with the barley water which was warm and soothing.
The syrup is served on the side.

For appetizers, had the chicken marinated with spicy sauce and peanut, Jelly Fish with Spring onion oil, Deep fried eel.
Smoked egg with black truffle sauce.
The deep fried eel was crispy and sweet so I loved it and the Jelly fish was hard and crisp like cartilage in fragrant spring onion oil.

Shanghai meatballs can be served in gravy or soup.
Tried the [Doubled boiled meat ball] which was served in soup.
It was surprising how good it was because it tastes much lighter than gravy and the meat seems leaner..

Next was the [Honey ham] served with steamed bun.
The ham was in this appetizing sweet clear gravy which had lots of osmanthus flowers.

Putting the ham and crispy beancurd in the bun made it a wonderful little sandwich with a crunch.

Now to the new Sichuan stars, the Poached mandarin fish with preserved vegetables which is available until the end of April.
It was the best fish in preserved vegetable I have had so far because I could drink the soup which was full of flavour and the mandarin fish was silky.

Also had the fried crab with assorted peppercorns and chili where you could taste those aromatic Sichuan peppercorns.

Next was the Stir fried kale for a balanced dinner with veggies.

The Steamed pork dumplings and Homemade noodles with minced pork and spicy peanut sauce was the last course before dessert which was really satisfying.

For dessert, it was Steamed yellow bean cakes stuffed with red bean paste and double boiled milk.
I was quite full but the double boiled milk was creamy and nourishing.

Although, the poached fish is available until April, I secretly hope that it will be there permanently.

I love the food here because it is affordable.
Most people don't know but they have been serving curry fishballs since 2016.
I have forgotten how they taste so went back for them.
The Curry Turnip and Fishballs cost $38 and you get a fair amount of radish and fishballs and the turnip was soft and full of curry flavour unlike some places where the turnip is not even cooked and tasteless.
If you like Chiuchow style white fishballs and squidballs, the texture is similar but much softer like marshmallow with a fishy taste.
Will come back for their other new dishes which I haven't tried.

Easter is all about Eggs hence Assaggio are doing an Egg themed menu available from 26/3 – 29/4 in the evenings.
There is a Sunny Egg Combo or you can order the items a la carte.
Using good eggs are important for the best taste, hence they have chosen to use organic eggs from Sunny Queen Farms where the chickens are not caged.

***
PIZZA GOURMET
Parma Ham, Spinach, Truffle Sauce, Soft-baked Egg

It had all my favourite ingredients, so I clearly liked it and I liked the way there was more spinach beneath the cheese as well on top which makes it healthy as well as delicious complemented by the parma ham and egg yolk.
***
HOMEMADE TAGLIONLI EGG PASTA
with Black Truffle Sauce and Golden Egg

I love the freshly made pasta at Assaggio and with the use of Sunny Eggs, the pasta is even more eggy in taste complimented by the golden egg on top.
***
As well as the egg dishes, the grilled chicken which was divine.
The smell and taste was almost like chicken from Nandos in the UK but lacking peri peri sauce.

***
CARAMELIZED EGG PUDDING
Finished with the caramel pudding which was thick, creamy and rich.

Sorrowful Rice Finale

Sorrowful rice 黯然銷魂飯 is a bowl of Cantonese barbecued pork, with an egg, on rice inspired by Stephen Chow’s 周星馳 1996 movie, The God of Cookery 食神.
This dish was launched two years ago hence this is version 3.0.
Last year, I tried version 2.0 and version 3.0 is the finale as they said they will not serve it again.
The difference between 20. and 3.0 is the Pork oil which is said to be more aromatic as they use Roast Pork oil drippings.

Here was the menu that night:

A nice appetizer to begin the dinner with French beans coated in Salted Egg Yolk and Black Fungus in Vinegar.

Next was the baked crab which was complimented nicely by the Special edition aged Worcestershire sauce from UK.

My sorrowful rice which was the 70th bowl out of 238 bowls served that night.

It was very satisfying especially with that thick egg yolk and the rice and juicy thick cut Roast Pork!!
[The eggs they use are Japanese Eggs and a special soy sauce which I wouldn't mind just pairing with plain rice because the soy sauce is that good.]
Again, a fork and spoon were seriously needed!
Dessert was Dandelion and Dragonfruit pudding and a mini egg tart.

Although this is the finale, they might launch version 4.0
Let's see!

On the weekdays, this joint does not stand out but it stands out on Sundays when everything else nearby is closed.
It didn't look open because it was in such a state, there was no air con and no one about.

The menu was reasonable.

I ordered the Sichuan Street Noodles because it didn't have meat.
The portion turned out to be quite big and I was impressed there was quite a fair bit of noodles in the bowl which won't leave me feeling hungry.
The broth was strong and spicy, there were pickled vegetables and lettuce on the top.
I will definitely come back and try other noodles so hopefully it will be consistently good.

Dumplings from Kowloon to WC

Their Matsutake mushroom dumplings are really good so tried the Wanchai branch to see if it was as good as the one in Prince Edward.
As it is new, there are so many curious people trying it out as well so I would recommend trying it later because the service is rather rude and scarily you can hear people behind the kitchen clearing their throats and err you know what they do next.......
Other than that, the dumplings were top notch.
In all past visits, I have tried their fried dumplings so had the boiled version which was surprisingly good as the dumpling skin isn't as thick as it looks.
The Sichuan cold noodles were rather strange because they were served with sesame sauce which I did not use and mixing the sauces on the table with the noodles tasted even better.
The table and seating is very cramped compared to Prince Edward and strangely the service is also better at that branch.

Cafe Life started off at PMQ and now they have a bigger and spacious joint on QRC.All their cakes are Japanese style and everything is so pretty.
The only thing is that, they could do with more tables to cope with people ordering toasts and other things that really need a table.
At the moment, Sakura is trending and on the menu.
Tried the Sakura roll which was delicate filled with fresh cream.

It was so good that I had the strawberry cake which also uses that deliciously whipped fresh cream.
Finished with the Sakura tea which you just don't want to add the Sakura foam cap because the flower at the bottom is so dainty and decorative.
The milk cap blends in perfectly and I think it had some slight saltiness to it.
