Chinese and Modern Vegetarian Fare

Gaia Veggie has been in Hong Kong for years with lots of branches.
I went to Gaia a few years ago for vegetarian food. The branch at Mira is relatively new compared to the other branches so went here for dinner.
There is a good range on the menu so you can opt from Traditional Chinese to Sashimi.

Started off with the sans alcool which is non alcoholic beer and it tasted exactly the same as the real thing even the way it poured out with the viscous bubbles.

That night we had a good range of dishes.
My pick was the mock Peking duck pancakes.

The mock beef rolls were tasty covered in sauce filled with vegetables in the middle.

We had a good deal of vegetables too which were not pretending to be mock meat so all were easy to digest.

My favourite was the baked vegetables in taro and coconut mash and the vegetables in beancurd soup.

The crispy tofu treats were delicious, they were fried inside out tofu puffs filled with creamy tofu filling.

Also had the Chinese Taro pudding as it is getting near new year.
It had chunks of taro and peanuts in it.

They also had Sichuan preserved eggs which were golden and scrumptious.

Finished with the cashew dessert soup which had a comforting sweetness and a thick texture.

I am not quite used to these liquid desserts but I would have loved it cold as it tastes like thick and creamy cashew milkshake.
Will come back again as there is just too much on the menu to try.

I love steamed fish

Gathering cafe looked almost like any other bingsut (Chinese chaan teng) but I was wrong because they offer almost everything on the menu ranging from Chinese bakery, Stir Fry dishes, set meals and even Sichuan fare.

As well as MK, they have another branch in Kowloon Bay under a slightly different name.
The staff were quite friendly and I appreciate their high standards for cleanliness as she checked the bowls before they were used and the ones not worthy for use were rejected  into another pile.
I went for steamed fish which does not come with rice so I had to order rice separately.

The fish was steamed just right so the fish was still delicate and they did not put too much oil on it so that the fish taste was still there.
It was a nice cut and the scales had been properly removed.
My friend had the Hainan Chicken which was shockingly huge especially the bowl of rice and you get soup and vegetables as well.

The sauce you get is Thai Sweet Chili sauce, ginger puree and normal soy sauce.
However the turmeric rice was interesting as it was fried yellow rice with bits of egg in it.

Not sure what to make of it but they said it was turmeric rice.

Overall, I recommend the steamed fish and they had lemon chicken as well which I failed to see on the menu.

[Review 7116] Chicken specialist @ 樂湯雞麵館

I love this joint as they specialize in Chicken. There are so many options on the menu but basically it revolves round the herbal broth or the wine broth.
I got the rice vermicelli in herbal chicken broth which had a brilliant herbal taste but lacked the taste of chicken so I always order the chicken broth and the herbal broth and then mix them together.

As well as rice vermicelli they have knife cut noodles as well.
The menu prices seem to differ on openrice so I wonder if the menu is different for lunch and dinner.
Will be back again.
The place is a bit grubby so be warned.

Oyster Sushi

Spotted some oyster sushi which I rarely see at Sushi Takeout so decided to try it.

It is labelled as Frozen boiled oysters and they cost $3 per piece.
I got 3 pieces so that I could try it in three ways.
1) on its own
2) with soy sauce
3) with soy sauce and wasabi.

1) The oyster sushi on its own didn't have much oyster taste but it had a starchy mushy texture which makes sense as it was previously frozen.
2) The oyster sushi with soy sauce tasted slighty better but it didn't quite enhance the oyster taste.
3) The oyster sushi with soy sauce and wasabi tasted much better but then because it is a tasteless frozen oyster it really needed all the condiments to  bring out the flavour.

Although it wasn't very tasty but you get another option for $3.

[Review 7114] Worst Quattro Burger @ 麥當勞 McDonald's

Since the Quattro Burger was launched, I have it whenever they serve it because it contains 4 slices of cheese.
2 white and 2 American Cheddar according to the menu.

The Quattro burger is served one day only or whenever they decide to!
It always comes with a soft drink which I never drink because I just don't drink soft drinks so paying HKD16 for the burger is ok.
Anyway, when it came, I noticed there was only two slices of cheese so looked underneath the patty and there wasn't anymore cheese so exchanged it.

Here was the second burger which was cold when I unwrapped it.
It was so cold that you can see the slices of cheese distinctly that evidently the beef patties were not even hot when it was assembled.

The taste was bad because the bun wasn't soft and the cheese just doesn't taste as good when it hasn't melted.

[Review 7113] Real Juices but why the sweetener @ 鍾美鮮果汁咖啡 Johnny Fruit Juice & Coffee

There are two branches of Johnny's one in Kowloon Bay and one in Kwun Tong.
I was quite impressed that they had so many beverages on the menu which take up a third of the menu choices.
I liked the vegetable juice choices as they had celery, cucumber, tomato etc.

Ordered a hot chocolate and cucumber juice to start with.
The hot chocolate was a bit weak but then discovered the rest of the chocolate mix was at the bottom.
The cucumber juice was good as it was freshly blended cucumber which impressed me to order the tomato juice.
To my horror, the tomato juice was sweetened which really pissed me off.

I ordered tomato juice because I love the way natrual tomato taste ie umami with a bit of savoury and tartness.
If you buy canned/carton tomato juice from the supermarket, it won't have sugar in it.
The sweetener was just weird and ruined the purpose of drinking vegetable juice to be healthy.
Although my day was ruined, I do want to come back and try the strawberry milkshake to see if they use real strawberries and order another TJ without sugar.

A great Hangout corner

I love hanging out on the Hong Kong side because there are so many decent eateries and places to see.

The Hangout Corner is near PoHing Fong which is in the middle of some steps.
Although the location is a bit difficult I found a shortcut to walk here by crossing to the mall from Sheungwan Civic Centre.
Taking the escalators to the top then cutting through the small park, crossing the road and the restaurant is on the left somewhere.
Inside, I loved the decor and the Chinese wooden plaque which shows their sous vide kung fu skills!

The menu is pretty creative and I love the side dishes so I got the fried prawns topped with salted egg yolk with pickled vegetables and taro mash.
The taro mash was so damn good, I loved the taste and textured.
The best thing is that they didn't put any colouring or ruined it with sugar.
As they ran out of tempura batter that night, they used cutlet coating instead.

I also had the pickled veg (saukeraut) to complement the prawns as I figured it would get a bit heavy having all the prawns to myself.
Definitely coming back with more friends as I haven't had the sous vide meat yet but judging by the sandwiches at their closed branch in TST, it is going to be damn delicious.
Finished with the chocolate coconut water which was something  creative.
For dessert, had the caramelized pineapple and icecream which was juicy and a great finish for the evening.
