Quick dinner at San Xi Lou

San Xi Lou is a restaurant that started off in the Mid Levels and now they have branched to Time Square.
The second branch is much more convenient so went here for dinner.
The menu is pretty much the same.
You get given some starters with the tea when you sit down.
The usual Chinese policy, you either get charged for tea or snacks.
I love Gastrodia Fish head soup so ordered it.
There was a promising strong herb smell when it came.
The lamb with spring onions was not how I expected it to be as the lamb tasted like beef.
It was still ok but the spices were not strong enough, I was expecting more of cumin.

[Review 7420] Consistently good!~ @ 金鶴拉麵 Kane Tsuru Ramen

I have been to Kane Tsuru so many times because of the eel!
There are four branches now at North Point, To Kwa Wan, Jordan and Central.
The first time I had the signature ramen then the second time I had unagidon and loved it.
Went to the new branch at North Point as it is less busy but compared to other joints, this one wasn't so private as there is a big glass door.
The menu is the same.
Ordered the Unagidon and unagi skewer just to see if there is any difference.
Although the unagidon eel is boasted to have a good thickness, I didn't find it that thick but in general thicker than other restaurants.
The eel was boneless and succulent so it was satisfying and the eel skin was slightly chewy and crispy without oilyness.
I haven't been to Japan but I would expect the roasted eels everywhere to be boneless but in Hong Kong everything is sub par in quality which makes normal restaurants exceeding.
The skewer seemed thicker and better.
Will probably come again when I am craving for eel again.
Coke is just coke but the cans here are the Avengers theme!

Happy Paradise is a hip bar that opens at night.
When you get there, you are greeted by bright neon lights and sixties cantopop.
As it was my first visit I didn't know what to expect as I didn't do any background research before going so the menu was a complete surprise.
Happy Paradise offers Chinese food reinvented with a modern Western twist which is presented in a totally different way.
While others may not appreciate this new presentation, I loved it especially the way different ingredients were used and put together.
It was really difficult because everything deemed good to eat.
The three things I deeply regretted not ordering were the egg waffles, wagyu noodles and asparagus salad.
The egg waffles were made with sourdough and you get to rip the pieces and dip it in bottarga whip while the wagyu noodles are the usual fried beef noodles with a twist using wagyu beef skirt, seaweed butter and preserved lemon.
The asparagus was creatively paired with daikon and chiu chow fermented bean sauce that is normally paired with the chilled fish.
Here is what we ordered which all satisfied my expectations.
++++++++++
香煎素餃,芹菜頭昆布沙律 — $88
SHIITAKE PAN-FRIED DUMPLINGS, celeriac kombu salad
The dumplings were perfectly panfried as one side was crispy while the other side was soft.
In the middle it was filled with mushrooms complimented by the crunch of the salad.

+++++++++
IMPOSSIBLE 新疆 「素肉」餅,梅菜素肉,新疆香料 — $88
IMPOSSIBLE XINJIANG HOT PACKET, patty, cumin, Chinese mustard green:
Basically the pastry is similar to roti and the impossible meat filling was really moreish with the pickled mustard green but it was a bit too salty.

+++++++++++++
鮮魷魚條萵筍沙律,椰青水果凍,鮮白合,芝麻油 — $128
LETTUCE STEM SALAD, blanched squid "noodles" lily bulbs, young coconut water gels
0 讚好
For vegetables, we had the lettuce stem salad.
It is difficult to see the individual ingredients but everything worked in harmony because lettuce stem has always had this slight young coconut taste in it so pairing it with coconut water jelly worked.
I liked the way it had squid because of its delicate texture with sesame oil.
Overall, it was a less is more dish as all the elements didn't need much strong seasoning.
+++++++++++
蘋果糯米批,忌廉 — $108
MOCHI APPLE PIE, cilantro cream, apple ash
Again, not your conventional apple pie but with a twist.
I thought it was delicious because it was a flat piece of mochi what was crispy and chewy with sweet apple on a bed of sweet cilantro cream.
++++++++++
Mocktail:
Chinese almonds, rice and cinnamon
As well as food, the mocktails were impressive especially the drink I had.
It was a clever concoction of Mexican Horchata with Chinese almonds.
The marriage of the two was simply heaven because the almond was really fragrant so it was like mixing my favoruite drinks together.
+++++++++
Definitely impressed but it has been really difficult to describe how good it was because the food is really not as simple as it seems.
I am always a fan for food reinvented or presented in a different way for Chinese cuisine because it always tastes better.
Saying that, I prefer my English food traditional.

[Review 7418] Worst Lasagna @ LE BAR

Went here randomly so didn't have any expectations.
The menu had a lot to offer but in general it was really expensive!
I wanted to order the Hainan Chicken but the it came with coconut rice which I don't like so ordered lasagna.
There was meat or vegetable so chose vegetable to be on the safe side incase the meat wasn't fresh.
Ironically, the vegetables were dehydrated and chewy.
The slices of carrots were bruised.
It makes me wonder how long it has been in their freezer since they had it delivered.
The worst thing was that the lasagna came in this weird Sweet tomato soup.
The only thing that tasted normal were the chicken tulips!
According to the menu, it comes with sweet chili sauce but they gave us tomato ketchup by accident which goes better anyway.
The salad was pretty much standard.
For drinks, had the lemongrass and peach colada which were ok.
The apple crumble was revolting.
I almost vomited when it was served because you could smell rancid butter or shortening from the crumble.
As well as the crap food, the staff were hoping us to eat quickly and go as they just couldn't wait to serve the dessert even though we were in the middle of our mains.

Apart from Pacific Coffee, it is good that there is Subway and KFC.
To be honest the KFC at AWE is the best as the recipe is different.
Anyway, there is a sitting area at subway which it is located on the first floor.
It is called Subway Express which is slightly different to the other branches.
In terms of price it is slightly more expensive HKD60 per sub!
Anyway got the veggie delight which cost HKD60.
It was to my liking as you choose the bread, fillings etc to your liking.
The bread was soft and fluffy and the vegetables were fresh.
For sauces, I just had the mayonnaise which was enough to give it flavour.

I was captivated by the one person hot pots like 8 pots however when I got there I found out that they only serve it in the evenings which makes sense as everyone is in a rush during lunch.
During lunch and afternoons, they serve rice and noodles.
That day they ran out of herbal soup and beef shin so we had the beef noodles and the spicy noodles.
The beef noodles had a really strong beef aroma which you could really smell when it came.
My favourite was the spicy noodles because they come with pigs blood, fatty beef, meat balls and intestines.
The bowl seems to say soup and rice so it could be a sister restaurant to the TKO one.
Nevertheless, the noodles were good.
For drinks I had the Pure Kin Feng Tea which is sugar free and has a lovely tea fragrance.
Overall, it is a nice joint to go to on the week days and the staff were shockingly nice.
I was surprised they offered to turn off the air con as it was quite cold despite I had already finished my food and was just sitting there.
