Sorrowful rice 黯然銷魂飯 3.0
2019-09-03  737 瀏覽
Sorrowful rice 黯然銷魂飯 is a bowl of Cantonese barbecued pork, with an egg, on rice inspired by Stephen Chow’s 周星馳 1996 movie, The God of Cookery 食神.
Previously I tried version 2.0 ,  the difference between 2.0 and 3.0 is the Pork oil which is said to be more aromatic as they use Roast Pork oil drippings.

Sorrowful rice 3.0 黯然銷魂飯 is served as a set meal.
Available from 16/9/2019-12/12/2019

A nice appetizer to begin the dinner with Prawn head coated in Salted Egg Yolk and Prawn tail tossed in preserved fruit peel.

Next was the morel mushroom, conch chicken soup.

Now to the star of the show!

To eat, you have to mix everything together especially the liquid yolk and the finely chopped onions underneath the roast pork so the sweetness of the onions come out and the creamy yolk lubricates the grains of rice.

[The eggs they use are Japanese Eggs and a special soy sauce which I wouldn't mind just pairing with plain rice because the soy sauce is that good.]

Every spoonful of rice was heaven because of the onions, egg yolk and the crisp egg white.
There was also some lard which brings out all the flavours.
Moving onto the pork, it was just sensational, the meat was lean but tender and I finally satisfied my roast pork craving with this huge piece of pork!!
They use pork collar butt which is the best cut and the the roast pork is served with this glistening almost translucent glaze that is too beautiful and mesmerizing to eat.
It was very satisfying because I prefer my roast meats intact and not cut!!

Dessert was Daihaongpao osthmanthus pudding and the rose and Chinese ham pastry.

Definitely looking forward to version 4.0!

Will we see funky stuff like beetroot coloured fried egg or soya sauce pearls???

As well as Thai style Hainan chicken rice, some restaurants in Thailand also serve fried chicken.

When I found out that this place had fried chicken I had to check it out.

The restaurant is located between Wanchai and Causeway Bay so it is a bit of a trek.

When I went in, I saw the fried chicken in the cabinet which meant the fried chicken was already done.
The menu:

Ordered two noodles and the chicken combo:

The chicken looked good but the fried chicken was a bit cold and the coating wasn't crispy.
Although it wasn't crispy I was glad they didn't fry it again.
Apart from that the Hainan chicken was good but the rice was a little too soft.

Next were the noodles which were great especially their signature boat noodles.

The rainbow noodles were a little sweet for my liking.

Finished with the bittermelon soup which was to my liking as it was crammed with big chunks of bittermelon and pork.

Will be back for the fried chicken as it wasn't at its best that day.

Discovered this shop after visiting Basao tea.
Edgar is a zero waste and bulk grocery shop.
This Raspberry roll which costs HKD20 caught my eye!
It looked similar to FIG Rolls but double the size so I decided to try it.

The outer part of the rolls is crumbly with dried raspberry filling that looks similar to the fig filling.
It was not too sweet but there wasn't much filling.
If you are a fan of fig rolls, this is just as good.

King's Bakery at LTA

I am not a fan of King Bakery but they have now popped up at LTA.
LTA used to be classy but business is probably bad these days so they have to offer brands that are affordable.
As well as egg tarts they had Japanese oden, Hong Kong snacks and even Western wraps because this is a concept store.
I was contemplating on whether to get the tea or wrap but in the end I got the wrap as the other branches don't have it.
There were three wraps to choose from: Thai pork neck, Lemongrass chicken and Mushroom and Basil.
Got the mushroom and basil because I didn't fancy the other two.
According to the label, the wrap is made by [LIGHE FOOD] or are they trying to label it as [LIGHT FOOD], who knows.
As for the tastes, the wrap was good but the filling was terrible.
It was sweet coleslaw with Chinese shitaake mushrooms and basil, the combination of it all just tasted horrible.

Finally Hong Kong has a good bakery, in expat terms a reasonable bakery because the ones around are just inferior and local due to ingredients and and the way they make them.
There are always queues and queues since it opened which is a good sign but I haven't been able to get what I want as it was sold out.
The items that I would want to try are the sourdough egg tart but again couldn't get it so I got a donut!
It was good in Hong Kong terms in the sense there wasn't any rancid oil and the donut was soft and fluffy.
Inside it was filled with lots of jam.
Overall, it was not bad but I don't think I tried something that represents the BAKEHOUSE properly.
The trouble with the donut is that it ranks the same level as Marks and Sparks.
For real Western bakeries, it is just hard for them to produce a crappy donut because it is just fried dough!

My quest for vegetarian food is all about having acquaintance with it.
Ever since Fairwood launched the omnipork series I have been meaning to try the Omnipork tofu but their omnipork menu is on rotation.
I think there are 4 vegetarian dishes that are on rotation which means a 0.25 chance of that dish on the menu plus the probability of it not being sold out and the probability I haven't made plans for FOOD!

It was Thursday night and I was in Wanchai so I tried my luck!!!

It was on the menu and still available to order as it was 6ish that time so I was super happy as the guy at the cashier was super friendly.
Wanchai is a good bet because the office people have buggered off.
Evenings are better as you get table service just like McDonalds.
If it wasn't for omnipork, I doubt I would be dining here as the meat isn't edible because you just get fat and bones which I end up not eating.
If you look at it closely, the sauce is evidently a thick paste and dark.
Unfortunately it was too salty but the best omnipork tofu I have tried because you can taste the Sichuan peppercorns, salted vegetables (jaachoi) and shiitake mushrooms.
The taste is similar to the omnipork tofu at Green Common Deli recipe from TASTE. Kowloon Tong but GCD is sweeter.
As it was salty, I requested for more rice to finish it off and they were happy to give me more rice.
Funnily enough, I was still hungry afterwards.
Even though it was too salty, I am still going to try another branch and see how it compares.

Kitchen Bros @ BRIM

Last week tried Kitchen Bros in Kwun Tong and I loved it.
Decided to try the Wanchai branch as well because they have a dine in area which is really stylish and cute but a bit awkward to sit there.
Anyway, I got addicted to their soups on the last visit so came back for the other two flavours.
Both soups are Chinese inspired Western soups.
Got the carrot pork soup [hunglohbakjugwattong] and the veg pork [choigonetong].
My favourite was the veg because it tasted like Western watercress soup.
Overall I love this joint but it can be a bit a blinding when the sun is on that side.

Interesting Chinese Drinks
2019-07-30  1549 瀏覽
I was walking past after trying Kitchen Bros and this joint caught my eye as it was a coffee yet they had Chinese drinks like Barley Water and Longnan.
Initially I was tempted to try them but they said it was sweetened so I had the tea instead.
Normally I would pick Earl Grey but as I don't know what brand they use so chose English Breakfast instead.

In the end it turned out to be Twinnings.
Overall tea was just tea but not a good environment for a drink because I might as well drink tea next to a bunch of faggots smoking.
