I love Phillipino food when it is not too oily, the food here is just right.

Phillipino food is normally sugary and also sour because they like to add Lemon or Vinegar to their food.

I started with a plate of noodles, the Pancit bihon it was thin rice noodles cooked with soy sauce some lime juice.
There are two sizes: a plate for $10 or a plate for $15, I knew I was going to like it, so ordered the bigger portion.
The noodles are flavoured nicely with notes of lemon. I added extra chilli vinegar to it as well, which made me even hungrier.

After the noodles, I ordered the Brazo de Mercedes (Egg Meringue Roll) which is considered a cake in the Phillipino cuisine.

There were four cakes to choose from, Taro roll, chocolate roll, egg meringue roll, and this other one which I didn’t know what it was.
Brazo de Mercedes (Egg Meringue Roll)
It is a rolled cake made of egg whites with a rich custard filling, or sometimes lemon.
The one I had contained some lemon flavouring.
The texture of the meringue was interesting, it was denser than normal meringue, almost like cake.
I wondered if they added some flour into the meringue or it was the method they used to make the meringue.
Italian meringue is also dense, but this one is much denser, it feels like your eating a cake.

In the Phillipines, they were colonised by the Spanish, some foods were influenced by them.
I tried the ensaymada, which was slightly Spanish.

ensaymada
Ensaymada is a brioche made with butter instead of lard, and topped with grated cheese (usually aged Edam, known locally as "queso de bola") and sugar. Upscale versions of ensaymada are also topped with butter cream.
The one I had was slightly bland, so I put some of the sweet meringue on it, which made it just right.

In general Phillipino food is colourful, from purple cakes to green puddings.

[Review 1088] Food was rubbish @ 福井茶室

Although the food was awful, the service was good on the other hand.
The staff were very polite and attentive.

Originally planned to go to 北海道牧場餐廳 Hokkaido Dairy Farm Milk Restaurant
http://www.openrice.com/restaurant/sr2.htm?shopid=50856
however it was not open.

Went round the corner, and this restaurant seemed similar to the one I intended to go, so I had a look at the menu outside.
The menu was very confusing, but I still went in.

There was no English whatsoever.

Ordered a curry wagyu beef which included a poached egg, and an extra toast with a thick slice of egg and cheese.

The curry was so bland, and the beef was tasteless and there wasnt much curry sauce.

The poached egg was ruined by the so called Japanese sweet sauce.

The egg sandwich was the worst, the waitress brought it over and informed the egg inside the sandwich had collapsed!
Gee Thanks!!! Eggquake by the chef?????????

The egg in the sandwich was not what I was expecting! If you have tried chinese steamed egg, it is basically a big slab of that of 1 inch thickness in the sandwich, and also tasteless. The egg was cold, hence the cheese didnt melt.
Having egg in a steamed fashion inside the sandwich totally defies having an egg sandwich, when you pick up the sandwich, the egg is so sloppy it falls out, not like a firm fried omelette style.
Imagine the skill trying to eat a toast filled with Jelly.

I think this sort of catering would do well in hospital for patients on a low oil and sodium diet apart from the overly salty soup.
The egg in the sandwich is virtually oil free, it is basically steamed egg!!!! The sandwiche was no buttered which is good, I don't like heavy Chinese stinky butter that other Chinese places do.

Finally the taro milkshake made with Hokkaido milk was really disgusting, the taste was so horrible I wanted to puke!!!
It was also so powdery. The taro taste wasn't even taro.

superPOWDERy taro milkshake
I think the product shot for the egg is funny, the menu saids a choice of scrambled egg or poached egg, but the product shot is neither.
It looks like two fried eggs because for poached eggs the yolk is slightly covered by the white, just like the that was served!!

[Review 1087] Street style ramen in Wan Chai @ 幸亭拉麵 Yukitei Ramen

I think this review should be written in two parts:
Part 1: For those who haven't tried Butao
Part 2: For those that have tried Butao.

In general, this noodle joint is located at Luet Fat street, which corners into an alley.
The kitchen is inside, and the seating is on a bar table that seats about six people, and two other separate tables.

The presentation of the noodles on the menu is similar to other Japanese noodles with pork, egg with runny centre, spring onions and black fungus.

The ordering sheet is a piece of paper which you tick the noodle of your choice.
The shop is newly opened, so it is not fully equipped, the staff there said there will be more fans to cool people down, and some sort of cover for the outside area to shade the people.
As they have newly opened, all noodles come with a soft drink.

For improvements:
They should have a menu with pictures, especially for those who can't read Chinese. I had to go to the front to see the menu.
Since they are only in their teething stages, I will not comment on speed of the food. I believe that this will improve without my comment.

Part 1: For those who havent tried Butao
Basically it is one of those street style noodle bar that serves noodles Japanese style.
You sit down, and tick the noodles you want.
There is a choice of how you want the noodles done, eg soft, normal or hard.
The noodles served here are the type you find in Ajisen, and the broth is slightly thicker and better, the soup is topped with lots of sesame, paprika and spring onions.
On the table you will find condiments to put in the noodles such as raw garlic, salt and pepper.
Apart from noodles, there are other snacks to order.
I felt that the price was slightly more expensive than the noodles at Ajisen.

Part 2: for those that have tried Butao.
The shop is slightly similar, but in Butao, you actually sit inside.
The price is cheaper here.
Same as Butao, the softness of the noodles can be chosen.
However the noodles served here are NOT the same as Butao, the ones served at Butao are thinner.
The condiment range isnt as big as Butao.
There isn't water provided like Butao.
It doesnt have an English ordering sheet.

As for the taste, you can judge for yourself. HideChan is still not as good as Butao in my opinion.

[Review 1086] Trendy Chewing gum chips tea @ 潮人飯堂 T-Pot Bistro

This restaurant is very intriguing, just like Mazter, they are both located in Hang Hau and the posh end of Sai Wan Ho, they both have wacky English names.

潮人飯堂 mean’s “Trendy dining room" in English. However their English name for the restaurant was T.Pot Bistro, nothing near their Chinese meaning.

There are no hotpots served there, so the name couldn’t possibly mean hot pots, or Bistro Teapots

Being a so called Trendy place, there were two interesting items, the cheese and condensed milk bun and the chewing gum chips tea.

I didn’t know what the chewing gum chips tea was, so I ordered that, and it turns out to be Jasmine tea so that wasn’t very funky.

The main attraction to the place seems to be the steamed fish at a cheap price on weekdays.
The fish is big and presented in a big glass dish filled with generous fish soup and herbs.

Apart from that, they served all day dim sum.

Ordered the Fried foie gras dimsum, noodles in Chiu chow style, cheese and custard bun, vegetarian sharks fin soup and the steamed fish.

Fried Foie Gras:
This was totally not what I was expecting, there was no liver inside, but fruit salad!

Chiu Chow style noodles:
I have tasted better before, the noodles were not uniformly cut.

Vegetarian sharks fin:
Totally bland!

Vegetarian sharks fin soup
Steamed fish:
This was the only dish that tasted OK, the soup was nice, no msg, strong in pepper.

Steamed Cheese and custard bun:
Couldn't taste the cheese.

[Review 1085] A BLT'd chicken supreme @ 麥當勞 McDonald's

It’s always good when Burger King has new burgers, then McD’s will also have something different to try.
I couldn’t try the one before at McD’s because it was too spicy, but this time I tried the Chicken Supreme .

The Chicken Supreme is a crunchy chicken patty in light coating with herbs, sandwiched with cheese, crunchy bacon, julienne carrots and cabbage, a slice of tomato, sauce in a bun sprinkled with herbs.
The combination and elements were really good but I would have liked more sauce as it was bit too dry.
The herbs on the bun tasted exactly like the subway herbs bun.
Out of all the burgers at Mcds, I felt that this burger was the least greasy.

The Chicken supreme reminded me of BLT burgers mainly because of the bacon and tomato.
The bacon was nice and crunchy, a bit like the crunchy bacon strips sold at Marks n Spencers.

I would definitely have another one again, but more sauce is definitely needed.

[Review 1084] Excellent roast in the blues of Tin Hau @ 15+J Roaster

Its quite interesting that two roast chicken shops have both opened recently. I am not sure if they are related, but its good there are two options to try and compare.

15+J Roaster is located in Tin Hau, conveniently near the MTR, you cannot miss the ocean blue shop, there are seats in the restaurant too.

They offer roast chicken fast food sets, which include sides with a choice of coleslaw, rice or potato wedges. The style is quite similar to the US and UK ones.
It reminded me of chicken I had at Sham Fast Food, which also included coleslaw.

Roast Sai Kung also offers roast chicken on a rotisserie, but the choices at 15+J are better and the price is reasonable too.
REVIEW AT ROAST SAI KUNG:
http://www.openrice.com/restaurant/commentdetail.htm?commentid=2166368

Plastic gloves are provided in both places.

The cake and breakfast menu offered here looks good too.

Anyway for the meals, there is a choice of roast chicken or ribs, which comes with dipping sauce, there are four sauces to choose from.
Sauces: Ooh-la-la (spicy), Terigoma Sauce (Japanese grilled sesame sauce), 15+J Signature sauce and Sweetie Fruitie sauce (sounds cute!).

In the end I got the half roasted chicken with Ooh-la-la sauce and the 15+J Signature sauce, the sides I chose were the coleslaw and genki rice.

The chicken was roasted nicely, and there were lots and lots of herbs and spices.
It tasted like Indian chicken tikka, actually it did taste like Indian roasted chicken.
The chicken was nice with or without sauce.
Shame I didn't take another picture of the spices.

Ooh-la-la:
I expected this sauce to be red because it was spicy, but it was a light mustard yellow, it didn’t look spicy, but it was spicy!!

15+J signature sauce:
This tasted like smoked barbecue sauce with some herbs.

Coleslaw:
This was very finely shredded cabbage and carrots, the tastes was creamy, the best in Hong Kong.
The local ones are just sugary and mixed with salad cream.
Genki rice:
This was a healthy mix of red rice and brown rice with sweetcorn. Not sure why it is called Genki though, it doesnt look Japanese.
It would have been great if it was seasoned with cumin or paprika, or cooked in Mexican style.
Tomato and onion soup:
The soup tasted how it should, there was plenty of onions in it.

Overall I really liked their chicken, and it would be cool if the ovens or rotisserie with chickens could be seen from outside, it would attract lots of customers.
The service here is really good and the waitress is very pretty.

[Review 1083] Steamed pandan cake @ 鮮麥鮮飽店 Fresh Oat Bakery

Got the steamed pandan cake for $6, the taste and smell is exactly like the ring shaped ones from Singapore, but it was dry and hard which is really weird for something that is steamed!.
I think this point should be improved on, the reviewer before my review also commented on it being too dry.
Apart from that, it would taste exactly like Singaporean ones but the texture is slightly different, the Singaporean one is not so dense and has the chiffon cake texture.
