Hokkaido pumpkin croquette HKD13:
Have not tried their croquettes so decided to try it.
Basically it is mashed pumpkin inside the croquette which is coated in Japanese cutlet coating.
I found the coating too heavy and oily.
The croquette filling itself was not too creamy but it was too sweet.

[Review 1493] ☆Kitchen J☆ take away @ kitchen J

kitchen J

Shop 112, 1/F, East Point City, 8 Chung Wa Road, Tseung Kwan O
https://www.openrice.com/zh/hongkong/review/kitchen-j-take-away-e2225171
Ordered two items for take away: Green tea lychee soda and the warabi mochi with black honey.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Green tea lychee soda
The drink was surprisingly nice because the bitterness of the green tea powder toned down the sweetness of the lychee syrup and the soda fizz jazzed up the drink.
Overall I really liked it, but if there was less lychee syrup then it would have tasted nicer.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Warabi mochi with black honey:
The mochi was nice and soft, however the outside was slightly dehydrated that the powder fell off.
The black honey was in a separate little dish, so it was optional and you can control how sweet it is.
The black honey was nice and strong but not too cloyingly sweet.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Tea soda:
After trying the green tea lychee soda, I found the fruit syrup too sweet, so this time I tried the plain Tea Soda.
The tea soda tasted better than the green tea because it was made with red tea which tastes strong with some sharp bitterness to it.
There was some syrup in this drink which had sunk to the bottom and the sweetness was much more pleasant compared to the Lychee green tea soda, but I would still like to try plain green tea soda next time.

[Review 1492] Roast meat restaurant hidden amongst the market @ 陽明燒臘飯店
08/03/2012
陽明燒臘飯店
灣仔石水渠街21號
https://www.openrice.com/zh/hongkong/review/roast-meat-restaurant-hidden-amongst-the-market-e2223234
This roast meat shop is well camouflaged amongst the fish stalls and butchers that you will easily miss it.
As well as selling roast meats to take away, it is also a restaurant.
I got the roast pork with rice for $24 which comes with soup.
As well as the roast pork I had the chance to try the roast meat, the roast meat had crispy skin and the skin was nice and it tasted like it had sesame oil on it.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Roast pork with rice
The roast pork looked visually lean, but it was extremely fat.
Every time you took a bite in it, you could feel the fat in between the meat and the texture was the same as pork neck meat except for the roast pork was much softer.
Luckily the meat was not too salty or too sweet.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Soup
The soup was watercress soup and there was a huge piece of fruit peel in it.
The pork used for this broth did not seem that fresh, hence the fruit peel was probably used cover that up.

[Review 1491] Stinging nettles used for food in Hong Kong? @ 潮人飯堂 T-Pot Bistro

As always there is no customer service and and their service is slow.
Came here again and ordered: Chicken with deep-fried Perilla leaves, Fish, Deep-fried tofu with Chiu Chow sauce
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Chicken with deep-fried Perilla leaves
This is a popular dish served in most Chiu Chow style restaurants.
The one here was too salty and too oily.
I felt that the deep fried perilla leaves were not real perilla leaves because it gave my tongue a weird sensation.
I suspect that they were stinging nettles because when they are raw, they look the same.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Stinging nettles
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Deep-fried tofu with Chiu Chow sauce:
The tofu was fried nicely and it was a nice golden yellow.
The sauce that came with it was really nice, it had chopped chives in it and there was a slight garlic taste.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Fish:
As always the fish tastes ok.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Crispy tofu rolled sheets:
These were complimentary with the fish, in Chinese they are called “hengling” which means some sort of bell.
I did not hear any noises except that it makes a crunch when you bite into it, however when you dip it in the broth, it becomes soft and elastic.

Sweet tofu with green tea almond
The tofu was silky smooth but it lacked the taste of soybean, it was no different to the ones that can be brought from the supermarket.
There was some sauce covering the tofu which tasted like watery condensed milk, and the green tea konjac was nice but slightly too sweet.

[Review 1489] Attn: To expats n overseas born Chinese! Comfort Food @ 友膳坊 Charlie's Place

灣仔蘭杜街2號麗都大廈8號地舖
https://www.openrice.com/zh/hongkong/review/attn-to-expats-n-ovaseas-born-chinese-comfort-fd-e2223117
The food here is fantastic and every dish is good.
Here you will find the menu the same as the takeaways in England and many expats, ABCs and BBCs dining here.
They have all the comfort foods you would find at home and cooked with the familiar ingredients such as baby sweet corns, green bell peppers and those sweet onions.
The must try item is the crispy duck, it is not the Cantonese type with the thick fatty skin. The crispy duck served here and in the UK has crispy skin and soft supple duck meat inside to be eaten with those pancakes.
The pancakes are made by themselves too.
The price of the duck is about the same served in quarter and half portions with the same number of pancakes, which cost about £6.75 for a quarter of a duck and around £12 for half a duck! Here it costs $75 for a quarter and $120 for half a duck.
Likewise extra pancakes costs a few dollars extra.
The curry has the stuff you get in UK such as sweet onions and baby sweetcorns .
As well as Western Chinese food, they also do some Cantonese food, which is quite nice too.
They have duck leg noodles in a herbal soup with Angelica sinensis (donggwai) with wolfberries which I like, but unfortunately it gives me the nosebleeds the day after.
The drunken chicken leg is also good.
Even the Laksa matches the quality of the Laksa served in Singaporeoan places except it lacks the blood clams and prawns, but the taste is good enough and you can choose egg noodles to go with it instead of the boring vermicelli.
Although I usually order the comfort food, the eggs with prawns or roast pork is brilliant as well, especially with extra spring onions.
Apart from this place, I heard Cheung Kee is also good which I will try some time.

If it had not been the pictures in the previous review I would not have considered this restaurant.
The preserved vegetables served with the rice and the savoury soymilk looked good so I decided to give it a try.
Originally I was going to order the traditional Shanghai style pork chops but because it came with preserved vegetables, I ordered the five spice ribs instead.
I also ordered rice with the tofu stuffed with meat because I wanted to try their tofu.
I ordered sweet soymilk with dumplings and savoury soy milk which both could be considered as soup and dessert.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Fried tofu stuffed with minced meat
The oil was not fresh and the tofu lacked the taste of soybean.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Pork ribs marinated in five spices
With the preserved vegetables that came with the rice, it tasted similar to Tung Po style meat but without the fat.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Savoury soymilk
This was item that I came for and it did not let me down.
There was generous amounts of tiny shrimps, preserved vegetables and fried dough sticks in the soymilk.
It reminded me of Western soup because it was thick and quite wholesome.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Sweet soymilk with dumplings
This was inconsistent, I came here twice for it because the first time the dumplings were chewy and delicious and the soymilk was not so sweet, however the second time the dumplings were too soft and the soymilk was too sweet.
On my first visit, when the staff placed the bowl of dumplings on my table, there was a piece of spring onion in the the bowl, and I was impressed that she admitted there was something in the bowl and told me to ignore it.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
The chili sauce was also quite good for complimenting the food there.
