New gathering place at the Townhouse
2015-06-04 4885 瀏覽
Fans of Glasshouse are going to love this place because it is part of the Gaia group so they serve some dishes from Glasshouse as well as some new dishes.
It is located on one of the top floors of the California building with great views of Central.
At the entrance there is a lively cocktail bar.

The environment was relaxed so I took my time ordering and ordered more after the small bites were enjoyed.

Here was what I had:
++++++++
herbs garden:

After mixing the tea, it turned into a pretty purple drink.
It was a refreshing mix of lime juice, basil leaves and blue butterfly tea which turns purple.
The drink was really refreshing and acidic.
++++++++
Hibiscus dance:
1 讚好
This was a mix of hibiscus, sisou leaves and peach and the combination of the ingredients tasted like ribena and roselle tea.
++++++++
Salted quail, deep fried:
Started off with the fried quail which really started my appetite going.
Each piece of coated quail was so scrumptious with tender quail meat and a delicious salty coating that it didn't need the extra salt that was given.
I could have done with more of this!!
++++++++
cheese rice rolls, bacon and 62 deg C egg:
I was really glad the waiter recommended this because I just assumed they were noodles in a cheese sauce (according to the wording on the menu) but the waitor said they were rice rolls which made them even more interesting.
The rice rolls were panfried with soy sauce and topped with cheese and onsen egg which tasted surprisingly nice.
++++++++
My Pad Thai:
Normally for pad thai noodles, it is Cambodian noodles but here they have been replaced with squid ink noodles which were al dente and tastier.
After the egg was added, the noodles were much silkier.
++++++++
Duck soup noodles:
This was probably the best duck noodles I have had if they can keep the standards because the duck was fresh and the broth had a fragrant aniseed flavoring with a clear and non oily strong duck broth.
[yat lok is also famous for duck noodles but I haven't tried so I can't compare].
++++++++
Fresh shaved coconut:

To be honest, it did not taste as good as the one at Glasshouse because the malibu couldn’t be tasted and the texture was like a sorbet and not shaved slushy ice served at the Glasshouse.
++++++++
Fondue set:

This was fun to eat, dipping bits and pieces in the bubbling custard sauce that was not too sweet.

[Review 4367] Big portions! @ The Grill Room
03/06/2015
The Grill Room
銅鑼灣駱克道459-461號The L. Square 5樓
5/F, The L. Square, 459-461 Lockhart Road, Causeway Bay
https://www.openrice.com/zh/hongkong/review/big-portions-e2456757
There are not many Australian restaurants in HK so the only Australian places I have tried are Flames, Seasalt, which serve specific things.
Since I have just tried this place, I intend to try Bellbrook too.
The Grill room is themed by these wolves which actually look like cute foxes.
I love the table sheets, which are so tempting to colour in if I had colouring pencils.
I ended up ordering too much because the portions were really big.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆
For starters, I chose the sharing board which lets you choose 3 or 4 little bites and the portion was huge.
I had the mushrooms, chicken, clams and calamari.
5 讚好
+++++++
The calamari came with a lovely yoghurt sauce which was loaded with cucumbers.
4 讚好
+++++++
Sauteed mushrooms:
The mushrooms were quite creamy and great with toast.
6 讚好
+++++++
clams:
The clams were fresh and juicy with a nice white wine and chili flavouring.
4 讚好
+++++++
chicken:
These were crispy pieces of white chicken meat paired with a lovely peri peri sauce dip.
3 讚好
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆
Cauliflower, almonds and crispy garlic:
The cauliflower had a strong buttery aroma and taste.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆
Slow braised beef cheek ragu fettucine:
3 讚好
The beef was soft and gelatinous as expected but the ragu sauce was a tad too spicy but I loved the cumin that was in it because it is a bit like chili con carne.
I think it should say spicy on the menu because Ragu is not usually spicy.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆
Crispy pork belly:
4 讚好
It is nice that the chef has marinated the pork belly with kumquat which gives the pork belly an interesting taste.
3 讚好
The buttery caramelized apples tasted great with the smoky pork belly.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆
Peri peri spring chicken
This tastes just as good as the chicken from Flames.
It was tender, juicy and flavourful.

[Review 4366] Still good @ 川熙樓 Chuan Xi Restaurant

2/F, 17-19 Ashley Road, Tsim Sha Tsui
https://www.openrice.com/zh/hongkong/review/still-good-e2456744
Since my last visit, the restaurant has changed and the restaurant is like a casual canteen.
Some of the dishes were different so tried the new ones and soup.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆
Large soup:

This was an earthy soup loaded with mushrooms.
0 讚好
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆
Blueberry mountain yam:
0 讚好
The mountain yam slices were crisp with a sweet blueberry sauce and a hint of freshly chopped mint leaves.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆
Fragrant sichuan pepper prawns:
The prawns were springy and tasty in a delicious Sichuan pepper sauce but again there was mint in it.
They used to have Sichuan button mushrooms but now they only do the prawn version.
I hope they bring it back because it was a tasty dish.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆
Vegetables in wolfberry soup:
0 讚好
This was a non spicy dish which was light and soothing.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆
Pork belly in garlic sauce:
Didn't try this because I don't eat fatty pork!
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆
Spicy mantis prawns:
This was as good as the last visit, the springy mantis prawns had a dry spiciness.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆
Lamb in red broth:
The lamb was quite spicy, but then as you ate, everything was spicy so it was hard to tell what was the spiciest.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆
Spicy water frog:
This was my favourite because the frog had a texture like chicken that was silky yet spicy.
It was good there were pieces of cucumber to help sooth the spiciness.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆
Peach tree gum in soy milk:
For dessert, we had peach tree gum which is sap/resin that oozes from a peach tree.
It doesn't have any taste but it has a crisp jelly texture.

[Review 4365] Icecream spaghetti @ Nun Korean Dessert

Nun Korean Dessert
銅鑼灣勿地臣街12號地舖
G/F, 12 Matheson Street, Causeway Bay
https://www.openrice.com/zh/hongkong/review/icecream-spaghetti-e2456700
Saw on social media, there was icecream spaghetti at NUN so went there for it.
Not quite sure why it is called NUN but maybe the Korean meaning is different because nun has a religious meaning which I won’t go into detail here.
Tried the strawberry spaghetti icecream which is just vanilla icecream extruded into spaghetti form, the texture was just like normal soft icecream and it was quite starchy.
Then I had the meiji chocolate sherbet which was rather clumpy and hard compared to other Korean places in Hong Kong.
It is garnished with meiji chocolate hence the name meiji chocolate sherbet.

[Review 4364] Icecream in a tin @ Initial Ice Cream Store

Shop 2, G/F, 48 Cameron Road, Tsim Sha Tsui
https://www.openrice.com/zh/hongkong/review/icecream-in-a-tin-e2456640
The first icecream I tried at Initial d wasn't good because it tasted like HK milk tea, but went back because they had this new salad flavour icecream that is served in a tin garnished with ice lettuce.
The icecream was really nice because it was spiked with lots of black pepper which went well with the tartness of the icecream.
After you finish the icecream, you can keep the tin by removing the plastic cup.

Since my last visit, there are so many new items on the menu and the existing items have improved.
We came in a big group so we shared.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆
Chips and Salsa:
0 讚好
These were addictive and moreish with the tasty salsa, guacamole and sour cream dips.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆
Fajitas:
This is a new item with a colourful 7 layered dip made with refried beans, guacamole, cheese, salsa and olives.
The beef was juicy and delicious with the lime wedges that were given.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆
Beet Fries:
The beet fries are coated in cornstarch flour which gives them a lovely crispy coating while the beetroot is kept juicy and moist.
They were definitely addictive!!
But be warned cooked beets will change the colour of your urine and faeces, so don't be shocked!
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆
Tater Tots:
These were crispy mashed potato nuggets which had a nice crunchy and cheesy taste.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆
Chicken Waffle:
This is an improved version of the waffles I had before because the waffle is different and it had a nice sweet and savoury balance.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆
King Kong:
I liked this burger because it had spam in it.
