Beer pong and pool with Thai food!
2017-06-11  101 瀏覽
My friends who are always on the Kowloon side suggested to come here on a Friday night because this place has pool and beer pong.
They are regulars at Hair of the dog which this bar is part of but here they serve Thai food and not Western food.
For drinks had the pina colada and lychee mojito.
The pina colada was quite good because they put milk in it as well as coconut so it is a lot smoother.
We had some juicy beef cubes which had a lovely peppery taste.

The Pineapple fried rice was really good because the curry taste was strong and there were juicy chunks of pineapple and sweet raisins in it.
The raw prawns were crisp and springy paired with fiery Thai sauce and there were so many that it was enough for the four of us.

Chocolate and coconut bread

Every now and then, Tai Pan bakery will come up with some creative bakery and I will always fall victim for it!!This time they came up with this coconut and chocolate bread which got my attention because it was big and it was dusted with this weird cartoon with glasses and a moustache.
I didn't take a big first bite but I was impressed that there was some filling right to the edges and it was uniform in the middle.
The coconut filling inside was sweet and savoury, the exact stuff you find in Chinese cocktail buns (coconut buns) but white.

Not bad but I prefer the texture of Western bread.

A brilliant twist of Western and Chinese fusion

The pairing of Chinese and Western food often go wrong but the food here was spot on.
Before I came here, I assumed Bao Bei served dimsums and buns as one of the walls is plastered with dimsum baskets but it turns out not so.
Most of the dishes were mind blowing and flawless.

Here was the food we had:
++++++++++
Asian Style Brussels Sprouts:
I have always loved Brussels sprouts especially in roast dinners.
The ones here are stir fried with Chinese sausage which gives it sweet and salty flavour that balances the grassy aroma.

++++++++++
Mapo Tofu Fries:
This was like loaded fries but topped with spicy and juicy pork.

++++++
Rice Cake Carbonara:
I don't like carbonara but I found myself eating another piece after another because sauce was cheesy with pieces of parma ham and the texture of these rice cakes were soft which make them more palatable.

++++++
Char Siu and Egg Rice Burger:
I thought the best bit was the rice burger patty because it was mixed with seaweed.

++++++++++
Peking Duck Udon Pizza:

The udon pizza was a surprise because the udon was thin and crispy topped with generous smokey sauce and cheese.
++++++++++
Wild Mushrooms & Miso Cream Cannelloni:
I knew I was going to like this because I like anything made with pasta sheet and they were filled with wild mushrooms so it was vegetarian and light.

++++++++++
Baked Pineapple Bun with Curry Chicken:
I have to admit I am not a pineapple bun fan, but it turned out to be my cup of tea because it was a pie with a chicken inside it.
The chicken was tender and paired with the curry sauce.

++++++
Deep Fried Milk Pudding:
Finished with the fried milk pudding which was soft and supple milk pudding inside the crispy batter that was not too sweet.

Previously tried this joint in polam and I loved it.
At polam, the kitchen is small so they only serve noodles and egglettes.
Here they have almost all the Singmalay dishes I like.
There was a luxurious Duck in port wine sauce loaded with juicy cherries!!
This was great with rice.

The rice vermicelli with aubergines and spicy sauce was damn delicious because it was strong in taste with a hint of chili.

For tea, there is a crispy bun with salmon and onsen egg and the crispy bun was the star of the show because it was baked just right and not burnt.

For drinks, the pomegranate and cucumber was surprisingly good and it tastes fruity and not syrupy.

The Jasmine tea was nice and strong.

Last but not least, the bak kut teh was loaded with herbs so it was nourishing.

I love the dumplings here and never get bored of them.
This time had the egg and tomato dumplings in tomato soup.
Each one was filled with tender scrambled egg and tomato and there was a fragrant sesame oil taste to it.

The noodles were great because the spicy sauce was served separate so you can mix it yourself.
I found the sauce delicious and powerfully spicy!

The trotters were ok but some of them had a strange taste to it.

Went here because the name Ssal Bori Ssal was just different from other Korean joints.It turns out that it is the first Makgeolli bar in Hong Kong which is a bar for rice wines.
The interesting thing is that the expensive rice wines come in plastic bottles while the ones that can be kept longer are packaged in glass bottles.
There were so many rice wine flavours too like purple potato, chestnut, pinenut etc.

The one we had was as good as champagne and when you open the bottle the air rushes to the top dragging the sediment from the bottom so you don't have to shake the bottle to mix it.

For food, there were clearly two things I really liked and that was the DIY riceballs which you make yourself.
They were soft and fragrant loaded with sesame oil.
My next favourite was the potato cakes, basically potato rosti!!
Also had the ribs which were served on bed of cheese.
I am not an expert on Korean food but we were the only non Koreans dining therefore the food is Korean approved hence authentic!

Not your average steak house

An interesting restaurant that serves almost anything under the sun.
A steak house where I could get Raclette cheese and homemade charcoal bread stuffed with brie.
Discovered this place because it was covered in red paper so popped over to look at the menu and it was mainly steaks.

While I was looking at the menu, this friendly guy came out and gave me an introduction about this restaurant and showed me the kitchen which was huge.

To be honest, I judged the food by the menu because it was steaks and a huge variety of other dishes which is obviously there to cater for non steak eaters but there is nothing worse than expecting good Western food when it turns out to be Chinese style Western food.
Anyway, the location is a bit far from Wanchai so I only went because my friend went.
Starting from the bread, I was already impressed because it was charcoal bread stuffed with pieces of brie that is made by the restaurant.

I didn't stay long but I discovered there was Raclette cheese so had that!
It was impressive they had it on the menu because firstly you need the fork out on the Raclette grill to serve it and secondly the kitchen has to be big enough for all this expensive equipment.
They even served it with potatoes and gherkins which is how it is eaten so they know really do know about International cuisines.
Anyway, the Raclette cheese was just delicious!!

They even cater for vegetarians too because there is one page for vegetarians too and the potato noodles are recommended as it is tossed with truffle. My friend tried it and said it is similar to "taodaosee".
